Yankee Rally 2023, June 22-25, Palenville, NY

Yankee Rally 2023 will be held June 22-25, returning to the Catskill Mountains of New York.

The rally committee for 2023 consists of Mike (BearBait), Christine (Woodswoman), Chris (Sixpack), Bryon (pbryon), and Jamie (Stormrider).

We will be using the same motel we used in 2022, to wit:

Red Ranch Inn
4555 NY Rt. 32
Catskill, NY 12414
www.redranchmotel.com
Email: [email protected]
Phone: 518-678-3380

The Red Ranch Inn has declined to give a rate this far in advance, which is not surprising in these inflationary times. We expect, however, that the final rate will be generally in line with the rate charged in 2022 (which was $279 for Thursday through Saturday nights for rooms with either two queen beds or two double beds). They say that they will confirm rates individually when you call to make reservations.

The facility has a few rooms with three beds, kitchenettes, etc., which if available could be had for more money. Those arriving before Thursday will be extended a “rally rate” for their extra night(s). Those arriving after Thursday — ask the motel.

The motel has 40 rooms altogether, and has agreed to hold a block of 20 rooms for the VR until June 1, 2023.

Rooms are equipped with mini-fridges and hair dryers; some have microwaves. We think they also have tiny coffee makers, but we don’t guarantee that. The rooms we used in 2022 were slightly dated, but clean.

The property has mostly blacktopped parking, with a few areas of good, dry gravel. There is ample outside space for a campfire gathering, games, and general shenanigans. There is a full-sized swimming pool. And right next door to the Red Ranch is the popular Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company, which serves good Italian-American food as well as its own craft beers.

You should reserve your room by calling the motel, and mentioning that you are with the Volusia Riders group to get the best rate. It might be possible to reserve online, but you would not get the rally rate.

Note: The group that owns the Red Ranch also owns several properties in the Lake George area. Like all hospitality businesses lately, they are desperately short of help and hence are not prompt about returning phone calls, we have found. Persistence and patience are recommended. (Also, be prepared for “Indian English” on the phone.)

Reservations may be canceled for a full refund of your deposit by contacting the management no later than seven (7) days before your scheduled arrival.

We expect the Rally in 2023 to take its traditional form wherein some early birds arrive Wednesday, most arrive Thursday, and a few straggle in on Friday. We plan to provide a pizza dinner Thursday night, from the Brewery next door.

Group rides will be arranged on Friday and Saturday for those who are interested.

The committee will again work on providing breakfast opportunities, which will most likely be similar to what was done this year (breakfast bagel sandwiches and coffee). However, details will be announced later in one of the following few posts.

Those who do not avail themselves of the adjacent restaurant/brewery for dinners will find a variety of other offerings between 2 and 10 miles away in neighboring villages.

Fuel will be no problem; there are gas stations and convenience stores just a couple of miles down the road.

Guess we left there on good terms.
Yeah, I think we did. Management seems very happy to have us coming back again next year. :)

News, a bit of a bummer:

The Silver Spur Saloon as we got to know it in June is no more. Owner/chef decided to retire. Last day of business was July 27th.

News, somewhat encouraging:

Construction has commenced on a new tavern at the junction of routes 23A and 32A in Palenville. There's reason to hope it will be open by our rally in 2023.

Sad January bump.

Five months to this rally ... but in the dead of winter it feels like it's forever away.

Rally reservations are slow this year. I mean super slow.

We have 20 rooms blocked off at the Red Ranch, but clearly we are not going to even come close to that. Only 7 rooms have been booked so far, by the folks listed below.

The back building has 10 room in it, so maybe we can get 3 more people to reserve and fill that unit up entirely with Volusia Riders. How 'bout it, you fence-sitters? June will be here before you know it!

Rooms reserved so far:
1. BearBait & Woodswoman/Mike & Chris - Weds.-Sun.
2. Beezer & Free2BMe / Bob & Belinda
3. Mr. Johnny/Jeff - Thurs.-Sun.
4. Peter96 / Pete & Vickie - Thurs.-Sun.
5. Smokeater / Mark - Thurs.-Sun.
6. Sixpack / Chris & Linda - Thurs.-Sun.
7. Rellalou / Cindy & Michael

I'm watching with interest the preparations for opening a new restaurant/pub, the Griffin House, less than 3 miles from rally HQ.

I believe they plan to be open for Memorial Day weekend, so they'll have had a little time to smooth out the rough spots before our rally commences.

If so, the place will be listed in this year's welcome packet.

Oh, and that little joint with good food just up the road, The Silver Spur? Lady who ran that decided to retire last year, so I'd taken it off the rally eateries list.

But new people have bought it, and are operating it now as "One More Time Tavern & Grill." And the reviews are good! So it's back on the rally eateries list. :)

Hard as it is to believe -- man, time flies by -- this rally kicks off 1 month from today.

We're hoping that some of you good folks might be able to bring a few things with you to help out, specifically:

** Easy-up tents
** Folding tables
** Cornhole sets

If anyone could kick in here, please let us know. Thanks!

BeatBait did a 'proof of concept' today on a relaxed 2-county ride through some nice countryside.

Tip: If you have an EZ Pass, make sure it's with you on your bike.

Aiiight, we now have lined up:

** Two (2) EZ-up tents (thank you, Beezer)
** Two (2) cornhole sets (thank you, Sixpack and Beezer)
** Two (2) folding tables (thank you, Sixpack and Beezer) and
** One (1) fire bowl (thank you, Vortex1x)

These contributions are greatly appreciated. I think BearBait and I have all the rest covered.
