the oil when my 2006 C50T has been sitting....say overnight, the oil level
is just on the lower mark but when I crank it and run it for 10-15 ride and then check it about 4-5 minutes later it moves up to the middle. On a car the best indication of your oil level is when its checked cold but apparently not so on a bike. Mom says check it after its run a few minutes. Still doesn't make sense why it would have to be warmed to get true level....your thoughts?

Because some of the oil gets "hung up" away from the sight window. Unlike a car, with the dipstick going into the lowest part of the oil pan, the site window is on one side of the bike and there are other areas that can hold oil.

also, everything except water expands when it warms...so with a warm motor, you have a higher volume of oil than cold.

don't let it sit at the low mark anyway, though! warm it, and fill it to the full mark, or just under. when you do a filter change, you need to run the bike up a couple of times to make sure it's full, because the filter will suck down some oil as it circulates..

cheers!

when checking the oil, always check it when its warm. run the bike for 5-10 min to warm it up. let it cool for 5 min or so, then check the level. if you check it when its dead cold, all the oil is sittin in the pan.
