Weak passenger footpeg brackets?

I have been looking at different options for the passenger foot pegs. I hade an opportunity to check out a "Cyclistic" extension set up with floor boards on a Volusia a couple days ago. One thing I noticed was the amount of give in the OE mounting bracket and the support the bracket mounts to on the bike. Stepping on the board (I weigh about 180) as if to get on the bike caused the whole assembly (floor board, extension and bracket) to drop a good 3/4 inch. That startled me and I promptly stepped off.

This is not a problem with the OE pegs as the weight is distributed straight down on the bracket when a person gets on and off. After studying this, I notced the extenders change the fulcrum point and places the stress at an odd angle to the bracket causing it to twist. I hate to think of the implication here with a heavier person repeatedly getting on and off the bike with these extenders. Stress fracture of the bracket and support is a real possibility.

Has anybody else noticed this and does the Cyclistic kit come with mods to beef up the OE bracket/support?

No it does notcome with extra support: I have kuryakyn extensions and they do not either, although they are a lot shinier...

This was in fact a real big issue back in March of 2002 when someone noticed that their bracket bent in such a way it seemed to have damaged the frame. In the end, leverage was the culprit, and extending the brackets in any way with aftermarket stuff was left to be Highly Cautioned upon if doing so.

Solution: you have to have your passenger haul over and get themselves on the bike first, not use the peg/floorboard as a step. If they have trouble with this, the other method (not as safe for the bike) is to have them get on first, and slide up to the passenger seat.

I dont even let 110lb females use my pegs as steps, they swing their leg like everyone else. It is flimsy back there

How many other companys supply these "extensions"
Is this a problem with ALL of them . Just thought I'd ask , before I sink any moola into it .
The wife only goes about 115 , but , my daughter is a whole different package ...hehehe
Its not the extensions thats the problem, its the force of leverage they cause on the bracket on our bike. My longer pilot pegs, mixed with the kuryakyn peg extenders, can put strain on the mount if you step directly on it. From what I understand, passenger floorboards can strain it to extreme amounts... this is, however, using the pegs/boards to mount. They are perfectly safe one the passenger is sitting atop the seat.

There are ways around it though, DONT use it as a step :p
Thanx for the heads up Bench. Guess it's time to get out the pencil and T-square
Is there some way to beef up the set up? :?:
Custom made passenger lowered pegs

For those interested I have fabricated a better design (at least I think so) for extending the passenger foot pegs and in Chrome. I will be posting photos by tomorrow. I allowa you to use your exhisting rubber pads already on the bike. I plan to sell them for less than the Cyclistic ones. I have a prototype on my bike already and no pasenger complaints. Let me know what you think.
I also have designed a set of peg extenders which move the pegs forward 4" and down 1". I'm using J.C. Whitney passenger floorboards and Mama really likes this setup. She says she hasn't noticed any flexing when using the floorboard as a step, but I'll watch closely when we go for a ride this afternoon. I don't have a digital camera to take pictures but maybe someone will take some when we get together on the 19th in Ashville.

If you have a heavier person than that on your bike, you damned well better do exactly what she tells you!

Maybe someone can help me out. I bought the Kuryakyn rear peg adaptors #8821 they recommended for the Suzuki's. When I placed them in the existing OEM rear brackets, they would not fully extend. It appears the stock peg has a moving cylinder where the Kuryakyn is stationary. Do you know of any fix for this?
Never mind, I just realized I ordered the wrong part number :x

Passenger pegs

My Ol ' Lady was getting cramped leggs so I made some brackets to move the pegs out and forward for her and now she's a happy woman
I work in a automotive test lab. We could put this issue to rest. I have the tools to test the extenders. If some one would donate a passenger foot peg. I could do a fatigue and a ultimate strength test on extenders. I would donate mine, but haven't got the cash for passenger floor boards yet. 8)
Halfway through the long run at last years Yankee Rally, we noticed one members extended pegs were flexing enough that the bolt was scraping its way through the driveshaft cover.

The mounting location was only ever meant to have the OEM footpegs and no extenders. the extenders change the moment and cause a lot of torque on the mounting brackets which will, eventually, lead to failure.

i noticed the left passenger floorboard was bent out and down on mine yesterday. pulled the side cover off and saw the bracket was split on the frame with only about 1/2 inch of the bracket intact holding the floorboard on. mine is a 2005 c50t. I can promise you it would have broken off completely on the next ride.

i'll be calling the dealer to or tomorrow but i am sure they will want to charge me for a frame replacement. may try to get my next door neighbor to re weld the braket.

this is nothing more than a shoddy design and cheap metal problem. :x
