Hi all;

I'm going to be buying a new set of tires for my 2009 C50SE soon, and I'd like to hear anyone's recommendations. Most posts about tires are a few years old now, and with new models of tires out I thought I'd revisit the topic.

In the summer I ride everywhere instead of driving my truck, so that means commuting, running errands, day trips, etc. So I'm looking for a good all-round tire to use rain or shine.

But of special concern is something that can handle grooved pavement in construction zones. There are two seasons in Toronto - winter and construction. SOME part of my daily commute will be getting repaved, and this is going to last until the snow falls again. My C50 had Dunlops on it, and my bike was very skittish riding on grooved pavement - it got pretty scary at times. So I'm hoping that a person of experience can recommend a tire that will give me better control and a smoother ride on grooved pavement, if there is such a thing.

I can't say I've tried every tire out there, but I've been happiest with Michelin Commander II's.

I tried them once on my old Honda and have been using them ever since.
My C50 had Pirelli's on them when I bought it. When they wear out I'll be replacing them with Commanders.

Bridge grates, grooved pavement? I don't think anything will eliminate the effect they have on handling completely...That's mostly up to the rider...but like I said, I was happy with the performance of the Commanders.

I completely agree with the 2 seasons... Winter and construction!! I'm from northern Illinois so it's completely the same here. I moved to Georgia for 6 years and absolutely loved the roads in town and in the mountains. It was like riding on new pavement every day... Pot holes, never!

Ok off the topic... I recently purchased a 2008 C50 and I need new tires as well. I've been told the Michelin Commander II are the tires to go with too. Before I purchase them, any other options/experience on tire manufacturers? Another concern is sticking. Which tire manufacturer warms up the fastest so they grip around the corners? Maybe that was just a consern on my gisxer.... Thanks!!!

I always had Metzler 880's on my Suzukis

My last set was the Metzler 888's. The first day I had them it felt weird but I rode them home from California without issue.

Metzler ME880 or ME888. If you want something little different. AVON cobra or Michelin Commander 2. You will have no complaints about any of these.

I'm currently using Dunlop SportMaxx Road Smart III's on a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 650 LT. I'm not sure if they make sizes for a Vol/C50. They are a dual compound sport touring tire and work quite well.



The OEM rear tire wore out (almost to the cord) at 6800 miles (I was on a long ride), the Dunlop rear now has about that much mileage and is just showing a bit of wear on the center. The OEM front I just change out the other day (12766 miles) and still had fair tread, however, I'm getting ready for a 3-4K ride and didn't want to take any chances so I swapped it out.



I get them from Revzilla and they are fair priced. Reviews (sport touring bikes) show the rears lasting about 12-15K and the fronts 18-22K. This all depends on your riding style of course. With the current wear on the rear I fully expect to get 15K on it.........I probably won't keep the bike that long. :)


I have tried a bunch of different brands over the years and so far these are the best all around tire I've used. Good grip wet or dry, good longevity, and reasonable price.

Road smart 3 is not available in the C50 size.

I'll throw in another thumbs-up for the Michelin Commander II's. Smooth ride, good control on dry and wet rods, can't even feel grooved pavement, and they are said to have about the longest tread life on the market. My '08 C50 came with a just-mounted, brand-new pair, and after almost 4,000 miles they still look new.

I run the stock IRE's. Got 16k out of the rear and I'm at 23k on the current front. I'm on the gulf coast of Mississippi, so I hit all kinds of road conditions from bridge grates to sand and I haven't had a bit of trouble out of them. Was originally gonna switch them out until I rode up to, and on, The Dragon and Skyway. I swear by them now. And they are decently priced. Just my 2 cents.

I also have a 2009 C50 Special Edition with tubeless tires. A friend with another C50 had Bridgestone Exedra Max tires and recommended them to me. I replaced the original IRC tires with the Bridgestones and they have been an excellent choice. The front tire doesn't track pavement rain grooves and the set gives a great ride on the highway.

Just had new Exedra Max put on. Good god what a difference, bike corners like its on rails and actually wants to corner now, whereas before you had to wrestle it. No more tram lining on the motorway either, overall a much smoother ride tho Ive heard the tread wears out faster than some other brands.

I only got 4400 miles out of the Excedra on my CTX... It's incredibly soft compound grips well, but wear like a pencil eraser.

Thanks all.

I've compiled a list of the above recommendations. I'm going to go with the Michelin Commander 2's, but I'll keep the other suggestions handy in case the Michelin's don't work out for me.

Just remember to go easy for the first100-125 miles to wear off the stuff they put on them for storage till sold. It is very slippery. Just ride easy and you'll be fine.

My recommendation is to stick with the wide white walls, black tires don't look good on these bikes. imho

Where do you get your IRCs from. I want to replace both front and rear.
