Some of you folks may be aware that back in the autumn, forum member RichH bought my 2010 Victory Cross Roads.

Although I loved "Doctor Pepper," I was using only a fraction of the machine's potential as a long-distance cruiser. RichH, I knew, would do better. It was a very happy transaction, and we have regularly corresponded ever since to discuss the bike and Rich's work to customize it to his liking.

A few months ago, Rich informed me of his intention to ride from his home on eastern Long Island to Daytona Bike Week. He has put a bunch of time and effort into planning the trip, and preparing both the motorcycle and himself for the effort.

I wrote to him on Saturday, February 28th, and asked how his preparations were coming along.

That night he wrote:

"The Doctor and I have completed the first leg of our trip. Because of the impending snow, we started the trip one day early. I was going to start tomorrow. We are at my daughter's home in PA.

"I can't tell you how good it felt to be riding Dr. Pepper again. It's been a while. It felt so good traveling at 80 to 85 mph just to keep up with traffic on the Jersey TPK. :D

"Monday, I plan to travel to Hillsville VA. To spend the night. I just hope that there isn't snow on the roads come Monday morning."

As it snowed in the northeast on Sunday, March 1, he made a smart choice to start his adventure early.

Today, March 2, I thought of my buddy often throughout the day, hoping he was staying safe.

This evening Rich wrote:

"Thank you Chris. Your prayers worked very well.

"The most exciting part of the trip was getting Dr. Pepper out of my daughter's garage and down to the street. The driveway is blacktop, pitched down to the road and was covered with ice. I had the engine running, in neutral and I had both feet down on the ice/pavement and skied the bike down to the road, dragging the front brake to control my speed. Boy was I happy to get that over with. The trip only got better after that.

"All the neighbors that were shoveling snow stopped what they were doing to watch the crazy biker riding in the snow.

"After I got a couple hours down the road, conditions improved and the ride was very nice.

"I traveled 460 mi in 8 hrs. and 15 minutes.

"Weather looks good for my departure in the morning and my arrival in Jacksonville in the pm."

As I felicitated him, I asked whether he would permit me to share his messages with you folks here on the Forum, and he gladly consented. So I'll post these notes from time to time, and maybe Rich himself will also include updates.

Brian, yes, Rich tells me he finally has gotten the bike's seat where and how he likes it. It took him a lot of effort -- but sounds like it all paid off.

Here's the latest from him, as of 7:30 this evening:

I arrived in Jacksonville Fl. Safe and sound at 4:15pm today. 500 miles in 8hrs. and 15 minutes.

My weather forecast for both start and finish were perfect (well, so it was 82 degrees when I arrived in Jacksonville), but what I didn't get right was the 3 1/2 hrs. of light rain and drizzle. Luckily I already had my foul weather gear on for warmth so I didn't have to stop to put it on.

I was well into Georgia when the thermometer on my bike reached 80 degrees (you Yankees remember 80 degrees, don't you?), and I had to stop and remove a bunch of clothing. I was having a melt down. :)

Tomorrow, I will ride to my cousin and his wife's home in Apollo Beach on the West Coast.

My wife told me about the snow storm they had and the cold weather that they will be having. Boy, I got out of there just in time.

Sounds like all's going fine so far for our buddy!

Because we all like pictures, here's a shot of Rich on Doctor Pepper, taken during OctoVRFest in Gettysburg, PA, back in September.

Wishing Rich the best on His late winter cycle trip!

Hmmm......St Paddy's Day sometimes bestows a freakish blizzard on the northeast coast.

Sure Hope Rich enjoys suitable weather for a safe return ride.

Evening email update:

"Greetings from Apollo Beach, Florida. The trip from Jacksonville took four hrs. and went very well. The temperature got to 85 degrees. My pores are having to learn how to work again.

"I got the bike washed and performed a few maintenance tasks. Tomorrow I will check the air in the tires. I won't be surprised if I have to let some out.

"Tomorrow, my cousin and I will go to the gun shooting range and shoot some of his guns. That should be fun.

"Friday, March 6, we will ride to Daytona for the start of Bike Week."

:wayhappy:

Another photo, for fun: Here's Doctor Pepper as RichH had him customized and dressed back in November.

and here I sit in central Texas and haven't been able to even un-load the bike. Rain, rain and more rain. It's supposed to be freezing rain tonight. I need to get the tires changed and the temp to about 50* or so. Then I an go ride some of the hill country.

Sounds like Rich had a good day today, but not on his motorcycle.

"Today we went to the shooting range to shoot Charlie's 45 revolver and tommy gun. Great fun. I think I did quite well. Was surprised at how light the recoil was do to the heavy weight of the guns.

"Tomorrow morning we head for Daytona.

"Temps in the low 80's today, cooler tomorrow."

C'mon Rich, can't you sneer just a little while brandishing those weapons? (I know, he don't have a mean bone in his body). Sounds like fun in Florida.

Just received this note.

"Today Charley and I traveled from Apollo Beach to Daytona Beach. The trip took about three hours. About half way through the trip, we ran into colder temperatures and light rain. Later in the day, the wind kicked up to make for a pretty snotty day.

"We spent a few hrs. at the largest vender area and only purchased a few small items. Shortly before dark we checked into our hotel, walked a short distance for dinner and settled down for the night.

"Hopefully the rain will stop by morning and we can cover more ground.

"We hope all the folks up North are recovering from the snow and cold."

I told him I was sorry to hear about the rain, but said if he'd had a day without having snow fall on him, he was doing pretty well by my standards. ;)

"Hello all.

"The weather was better today but very windy. The bikes were covered with salt spray from the ocean. Our windshields, face shields, even our rear view mirrors were hazy with salt.

"Went to the Iron Horse Saloon today and back to the main vender area to visit the Victory bike display and had my picture taken on a Cross Country. Nice, but I like my Cross Roads.

"Tomorrow we head South to my Sister's home. We should be there by noon."

This message was timestamped 10:41 pm yesterday, March 8th.

"Hello all.

"Today Charley and I traveled from Daytona Beach to Micco Fl., located about 30 minutes South of Melbourne on the East coast. The trip took 2 1/2 hrs.

"Charlie's wife drove from the West coast to meet us at my sisters home. After a great dinner served by my sister, Charley and his wife headed home, he on his bike and she in the family car.

"Charlie and I made plans to get together in a week or two to take a bike trip to the Florida Keys. A neighbor of my sister expressed interest in joining us on the trip so maybe we will have another person to ride with

"This will be my last update for a while until I get back on the road again with my bike. No use boring you with my family activities, like boating and riding in an airboat.

"Take care,

"Rich"
