Motorcycle wont pass third gear

Today on my way back from work my 2003 Suzuki Volusia kept shutting off when putting it on third gear. Once I put it on 3rd gear the motorcycle started to die on me. I had to ride it in 2nd gear the whole time. Has anyone encountered this issue. Your help is greatly appreciate it.

Welcome from Kennesaw GA!

That is strange, and I honestly have no idea. Does it just completely die, or does the engine bog down?

Engine bogs down and die several times.
Just thinking it loud, but is it possible for the transmission to jump a gear? Could it be jumping over third and landing on fourth? What happens if you run the RPMs higher in second before shifting up?

Sorry, I'm trying to imagine what could cause that, and that's the only thing I can think of. Hopefully someone else has better ideas than me.
Just thinking out loud here, but does the '03 have a gear position sensor? I know the C50 does and if that goes bad, it could cause the engine to run poorly or shut off if it is bad.

On your issue...
Does it bog down just by putting it into 3rd, or only after you let out the clutch?
Are you able to pull the clutch in to recover and keep it running? If it doesn't bog with the clutch in, it wouldn't be a switch, position sensor.
Once you feel it is bogged and IF you are able to pull the clutch and save it, count how many more shifts you have. If you are in 3rd, you should have 2 bumps left to hit 5th, right? If it's only 1 or 0, you are somehow skipping gears.
If it bogs immediately upon putting it into 3rd, you may have a broken/bent shift fork trying to engage multiple dogs.
