I'm a tall (6'5") kinda lanky guy with big feet. With the stock heel-toe shifter on my 05 C50, I've found myself accidentally up-shifting intermittently. This typically happens at a stop when I'm fumbling my feet back onto the floorboards from the asphalt thinking I'm in first gear. The stock floorboard position surprisingly feels pretty comfortable to me for now. I was initially planning on installing Johns forward controls. They won't work with my crash-bar and I'm not sure I want them currently.

I "figured" a stock M50 shift lever might bolt right in and ordered a used one the other day when I was away from my bike. I can see now that this is no go for bolt-on but I think it might work if I drilled out the shift "shaft" on the M50 shift lever? Maybe someone has done this the other way around, adding heel-toe to an M50 and has some input? Does anyone know how the M50 shift lever length and angles physically compare to the heel-toe C50 shifter? Anything aftermarket available aside from Johns forwards? I would personally like to extent the shift lever a bit, i think I can accomplish this with a welder if needed. I would like to be able to return the bike easily back to stock so I may molest the M50 shift lever and put the stock away...

Try Tarazon Forward Controls

I have TARAZON forward controls on my C50. This or re-branded forward controls were recommended by somebody here on the forum years ago (found in search). I like the look and it works well. It bolts-on to existing holes where platforms are attached. They are well build, hardware is very decent. One small thing I might be looking to upgrade in the future are the rubber foot supports as they are quite minimal and depending on the boots you are wearing, might be a bit slippery (not dangerous) in rain. Quoting my review on Amazon: "I bought a black anodized. I bought mine from eBay. Installation instructions are lacking, but if you wrench on your own bike, you will be able to do it. Fit and finish is superb, there is no play. There are bronze bushings in gear and break actuators, stainless steel hardware is good quality. Overall, I'm very satisfied, especially considering for the money I've paid. I'm 6'3", riding a Suzuki C50 2008 and needed a few extra inches - this did it."

Installation instructions are lacking: one pager showing exploded diagram of the forward controls themselves. Instructions basically show how to put the parts together, but don't mention on how to bolt it on to the bike. Considering f I was able to do it (my first bike), I'm sure you would be able to do it as well. It took me maybe an hour of actually taking the original parts off and bolting on the new forward controls. I did "dry-fit" all the components, and preambled the forward controls loosely to a point that it was mostly a swap thing.

If you do go ahead with these, use lots of blue thread locker: this part is bolted on to the frame right next to the engine. C50 is known to vibrate a lot, so you might lose a bolt or two if not doing it this way.

All in all, I had them for 5 (?) month, and I'm quite pleased.

P.S. There is a chrome version as well, but I'm not trusting Chinese made parts to have very good quality chrome, especially where you will be applying some force to the bike with your shoes.

Fireman, thank you for your post. I'm scrapping my thoughts on using/modifying the M50 shifter. Anything can be made to work I suppose, but the geometry is all off and I don't want to "ghetto-rig" anything. I adjusted the factory shift lever up a fair amount to fit my big boots better... Still bumping the heel shifter unintentionally once in awhile.



I actually looked at the forward controls (online) you installed before I bought my bike and I think I even read your amazon review. They look good. I actually like the factory floorboards, not liking the heel-toe shifter with my size 16s. With my limited riding and long legs, I'm surprisingly fairly comfortable without forward controls for now. I would probably install "Johns" but i would need to ditch my crashbars. That may happen eventually?

Likely I will post the M50 shifter for sale, possibly look for another C50 lever and chop the heel part off. I don't mind having the heel option there, just an issue with my big stupid feet. :lol:

Your experience sounds so familiar, except that my knees were bent at a very sharp angle. I did have to ditch my crash bars, even after I made an extension for the bottom portion, and it was decent. I even moved my passenger pegs to the crash bar for longer highway rides. I was amazed at how much better the bike handles without the crash bars (I had Cobra installed). That hunk of metal upfront does something to the handling. In the end, I'm trading off a bit of safety and security (in an even of tip-over) and enjoying the bike so much more.

+1 on removing the heel part of the C50 shifter. I cut mine off right away when I got my bike. Was too much to deal with for me. I don't mind using just the toe. Different for everyone I guess.
