Motorcycle officer injured in wreck
Wednesday, April 16, 2008
SUMMERVILLE — A town motorcycle officer might have suffered a broken leg after a collision with a pickup truck on Dorchester Road that sent him flying onto a car Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Officer William Tolson III was flown to Medical University Hospital after the 12:20 p.m. crash, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.
Tolson was passing a funeral procession to block traffic, Brouthers said. He hit a truck driven by Shirley Mays, 68, of Summerville, who was turning into Old Fort Baptist Church.
Tolson landed on a 2001 Buick, cracking a headlight, Brouthers said. Tolson will be shown as contributing to the collision because he was passing in a no-passing zone, Brouthers said, but he will not be cited.
