After researching this issue several times, I'm was convinced there is no way to quiet the Suzuki V Twin beyond using a high grade synthetic. I've had two and the both hammered like diesels even with Mobil 1 and Amsoil. Today I got brave and decided to try an oil additive. I put 12 oz of Lucas Oil Stabilizer in the crankcase. This stuff is super sticky and clings to everything. I ran it for about 30 min afterwards and the bike does run a lot quieter. Not sure how long it will last. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and if they've had any luck.

Hammered like diesels?

Do you do your own valve adjustments?

I paid a mechanic to adjust the valves about 3,000 miles ago.

I tried this. It does make it quieter for awhile. I'd estimate about 500 miles before the noise returns.


The Additive will eventually wear out just like the oil does. Mainly due to the sheer loads in the transmission.


I went a step further and tried the Lucas 4T Oil, both 10W-40 and the 20W-50 + the stablizer (All full synthetic).
Within 3000 miles, the oil was a little better than the Rotilla T6, but the noise was still there.


The only way I've figured out how to minimize the noise, is to adjust the valves to the tightest allowable specs, IN 0.003"/Ex 0.007". At this tight, they don't make as much noise and the bike runs at it's best. However, your exhaust valves will need to be adjusted almost every 4000 miles. Because of this, I put up with th noise and adjust the valves to the maximums, In 0.005"/Ex 0.009". This way i don't have to adjust them for about 10k miles.


Two things, ...
1- the noise seems to go away after about 10min on the freeway once the bike has heated up.
2- When the bike needs topped off, I use the Lucas 20W-50 full synthetic to help replace maintain it's weight.
Using the Oil stablizer cost too much and doesn't work any better.

Some threads on here say the valves got loose over time, others say they got tight. I say people just arent adjusting them properly. Typically these types of tappets will get looser over time. Ive not touched mine and the bike is on 14000, as long as I can hear them and they're not too loud im happy.

Incorrect.

As the valves repeatedly pound themselves into the valve seats, the clearance between the top of the valve stem, and rocker arm goes away, hence, valves/rocker arms need periodic clearance correction.

No what im saying is some people swear the gaps get bigger whereas others say they get narrower, which means people just arent measuring correctly as two identical factory built engines cant have one going looser and one going tighter, so its human error.

Some say the Lucas stabilizer is going to wear out on me and noises will return. Its been six weeks and probaby 500 miles plus or minus. The bike still runs smoother than the day I got it (7,500 mi). Jury is still out on this but I'm still enjoying the quieter engine and I'm still pro Lucas Oil Additives.

Depends on what part is actually wearing. If the cam lobe or rocker face is wearing the clearance will increase.

The rocker doesn't actually contact the valve, rather the adjuster does, on one end.
On the other, I've never noticed any significant weat on the cam lobes and contact area of the rocker arms.
Usually the valves & seats wear on Japanese motorcycle engines.

Haven't seen it on the Volusia, but I've seen a few offroad singles that have had the hardfacing worn through on the cam follower/rocker arm. Also have seen where the adjuster puts a slight divot in the tip of the valve stem which will give it more clearance in operation than what it measures with a feeler gauge.

Psych0 knows what he is talking about.
My note: I would be concerned about using an oil thickener like Lukas causing premature engine wear during cold starts. Yeah, it may help for a while with warm engine noise but I believe you will find it causes premature engine wear over time.
