Does it matter what orientation the white cross shaped piece of plastic goes back into the ignition? I took mine out a week or so ago and am just now getting back to lube the slides and button everything back up. However I don?t remember how it was oriented and nothing I try works. Unfortunately the original pictures are no longer linked or it?d be an easy find.
I don't believe so. I had that piece out 10 times over 2-3 years. As long as it's not backwards. Each of the 4 sections are identical. What issue are you having. Won't go back in or no power after you get it back together?
Once I get it back in, I get nothing when the key is turned. No lights or anything. Before it came out, I would get lights but nothing else.

May be a harness issue. What exactly did you do with the white piece when it was out. Clean it, fix the brass contacts, loose springs under the contacts. The white piece when installed, allows the key to rotate and you feel the key break over from lock, to on, to start.

Do you feel those clicks when turning the key?

I lubed the one ?sticky? contact. Worked it until the grease was in and it went up and down with ease again. I did the exact same thing last year and it worked without issue. This time, I?m getting nothing. To make sure I?m not being dumb, which side of the white cross should be facing out, the ball bearings or the four contacts?

The four contacts should be facing inwards. One of the reasons the contacts get sticky or not moving on the small spring tension is heat related. Melting of the plastic. Discoloring, melted areas. Do you have driving lights or any electric accessories that were added?

Ok, I have it right then. I purchased the bike 3 years ago and it came with a light bar. I first had the problem end of last summer and thankfully found this thread. Lubed the cross up and we were back in business. This year I barely rode due to the birth of our twin girls. I went out to the garage to fire it up and take it to storage and all I got was lights. Checked the battery since it had sat so long but it was fully charged. Next guess was I had the same issue as last year. Popped out the cross, lubed it up, got it moving smoothly, put everything together and now I get absolutely nothing when I turn the key. No lights. No anything.

Have to eliminate other issues. So can you put the bike on a battery charger? Does it make a difference? What about jumping starting the battery? Any difference? If you didn't remove the positive or neg cable on the battery when your were doing the ign work, you may have blown a fuse. It's tight quarters there with the switch and you may have got a wire hot.

I had similar issues and had to replace the switch. The dealer wanted $250 or more. I found a good one at a bike salvage shop. Make sure you remove the back plate to inspect it before you purchase the used on.

Again, do you feel the switch rotating on the 4 contacts when turning the key from off to on etc and back again. I thought I had the old one in my garage tool box but can't find it right now or I'd take picture of what you should see.

I finally figured it out. I check all my fuses so that wasn?t it. I do feel the switch rotating when I turn the key. My trickle charger shows a fully charged battery. Out of curiosity, I put a multimeter to the battery. Ah ha! I?m only getting 8 amps. I think my trickle charger crapped out and instead of charging has drawn on the battery constantly for a couple weeks. Put it on my other charger and I can get enough to turn lights on and starter to click but it won?t start and the battery won?t take a charge. Looks like a new battery and I?ll *hopefully* be ready to go. Thank you for your help.

You can replace just the ignition switch. It's not very hard. There is plug near the switch. Just unplug it and replace with another switch. You'll have a different key for the ignition than for the tank and tool kit, unless you can find another gas cap and tool kit lock to match the ignition. Folks sell them in sets on Ebay sometimes.
