How about a 'THANKS' button at the bottom of each post? Then have a count of how many times a member has been 'THANKED' in posts? Just a way to show appreciation for helpful members.

Migth need a 'F*** OFF' button to though....:biglaugh:

gotta agree. how egotistical does one have to be that they NEED everybody else to see how "important" they are based on how many thank you's they have under their name???

since i've started here i've posted various mods and ideas that i've done, and i've never felt the need to have a "show others how special and important i am" counter under my name.

but hey......if your self esteem is so low that you need a thank you counter to make you feel better, i guess that's cheaper than a shrink if it works for ya.

The request for a thank you button came from a VR member.

The request was submitted as.
Just a way to show appreciation for helpful members.
I think it's a bit of a spin to suggest that some one wanted to see how many "thanks" they could accumulate.

Saying "thank-you" is a common courtesey that is slowly, and sadly, going away.

I really don't think he had any egotistical motives.

you're right. the words "PLEASE" and "THANK YOU" are lost in todays society. that's why i made it a point that those were some of the VERY FIRST words my son learned. and since he's been just over 1 1/2 years old, my son uses the words "please" and "thank you" DAILY and nearly never misses.

BUT......it's different thanking somebody in person, reply with a thank you, or pm'ing them. it's another thing to have a "thank you counter" under your name so you can see who gets the most credit. that's like putting a large donation in the collection plate at church and making sure you do it slowly and with large gestures to get everybodies attention so they see your large donation and make you look special.

now if the thank you button was set up in a way that it simply send a pm or private notification of some sort to the person being thanked, than that would be a different story.

is it possible to block the counter from somebodies profile??? or is there a setting to hide it??? because i would like mine removed.

Appears to be an across the board item.
I'm not seeing individual permissions regarding that particular button.

Can't help You with that one.

I am testing the block thanks feature on your account scorpio_vette. You raised a good point, and there was some options in the control panel that looked like it would meet this request. You should not see the thank button anywhere and your posts should not include one.

This is a test as I don't have this plugin on more then a handful of forums, I have not had the chance to play with it much. The thanks count in your profile I will see if I can manually modify or if its just an issue of the Database needing to update the counters and remove yours.

If you notice any bugs with your account please PM me right away, I dont want these changes to effect anything else you do on the site and this will help figure out this plugin a little more as well. Thanks for bringing it up. :)
well so far your guinea pig can no longer see any thanks buttons on other peoples posts or my own. and i haven't grown a tail yet, so i guess there aren't any side effects yet. LOL

thanks

I can see them on yours.
This is so stupid and totally set for the ego tripping this site is becoming. Really why not go thank myself for crap. If some one posts something helpful and I find it that way I'll post it in a thread. Are you so egotistical that you need this to appear under your name. If your gonna do something give us the power to ignore users posts. There are a few here I don't care what they post and would prefer not to see it.
F it I'm out

Really? Maybe y'all should take a step back and readjust how much you care about this...to automatically assume it is for the person GETTING thanked?

1) You can't thank yourself...so that is out.

2) it is just a way for you to show your appreciation towards OTHERS. So in no way will it help you 'show others how special and important you are'.

3) complain about a new feature that has ZERO affect on you whatsoever, when you don't even know about a feature you could have been using for some time now that acutally DOES affect you. Hmmmm....looking for a reason to complain, maybe?

so what feature don't we know about that we could have been using for some time now that does affect us???

sorry........somebody wants a COUNTER under their name that displays how many times they've been thanked does seem egotistical to me. i've thanked people here in the past WITHOUT a thank you button. i would either just reply with a thank you, or if i wanted to say more in addition to the thank you, then i would send them a pm.

i look at it this way........being a good samaritan is about helping out and not about getting recognition. but if i had a patch made for my vest where i could keep track of and show off how many people i've helped out with bike problems, etc.. just so people can see how often i'm a good samaritan and how many people i've helped, then they would call that egotistical. same thing.

What exactly is wrong with telling someone thanks with a button? How does this end your world to the point where you would actually be upset about it? Guess what...a LOT of people are gonna have ZERO's for how many times they've been thanked. While they might have a whole bunch of times that they have thanked other people. I'm sure they aren't going to be emotionally scarred by it.

And the ignore feature that was asked for that is already available.

This is something that is available because we have moneybags supporting this board now. Why not have it avialable for people that want to use it and you can just IGNORE THE SITE OF IT??

and again...that is like thanking youself..WHICH YOU CAN'T DO!!!!! What if the person you helped gave you the patch to wear? You didn't ask them to..they just did it. Would it be egotistical to wear it?

That argument doesn't hold water.

Unless you go around bragging that they gave you that patch, noone would know.

Just my opinion.

edit: I see you were responding to the quote from scorpio_vette about patches -- but my argument still stands.

Nothing wrong with thanking people, but I do agree that then showing in the profile area with each post how many times one has been thanked or has thanked someone does point towards more than wanting to thank others. I, personally, don't like the button because I don't want there to be a competition over who has received the most thanks. I also don't like how it clutters up the threads. That having been said, I don't see it as such a big deal that I need to get all nasty about it... I also know it wasn't requested with egotistical intent. I would like to see the thanks count removed from posting automatically in one's profile under their post count.
I LOVE IT! The people in this place can even argue about thanking people. Wow...just wow!

If you don't like it. Don't use it. If you get bothered by the SIGHT of something like that....well that is for you to work out on your own.
