Hi,

has anyone on here ever used flex-hone on his C50 engine?
The flex hone is supposed to reinstall the honing scratches - but not to remove material.
Apparently it is quiet common in the dirt bike world.

Maybe something to consider when the engine starts to use oil, or maybe even earlier to prevent it?
As we have all seen the C50 cylinders do tend to have bore polishing/glazing more common than we would want them to.

Regards,

Alex

The cylinder walls are plated with NIKASIL. If you do any honing, you will remove the anti-friction compound, which will increase wear as the piston rings rub up and down on the cylinder walls. There's not much you can do to prevent these engines from using oil.

thanks Skrap, that is even more strange then. BMW motorcycles use Nikasil cylinders as well - and reach over 100.000 miles with ease. So the issue with the C50 must then be with the piston, maybe having enough wobble when cold?
Rings wearing faster than desired? But then a ring job should be easily sufficient.

Not too many ways for the oil to get consumed .....

Some bikes run forever and never have a problem. A lot start burning oil at very low miles and the engines usually let go between 25 and 50k miles. You never know which you're going to get.
