I'm looking to add a luggage rack to the back of my '07 M50. I don't need the backrest but I can't find a rack that doesn't need the sissy bar brackets to mount to. So my question is, can I mount the whole assembly minus the actual upright backrest part? Looking at photos I am led to believe that I can. And if need be I could mount the backrest back on.

Yes, you can mount a luggage rack to the frame rails without installing the sissy bar. I did that on my C50 when I mounted a 48l topcase. The issue came finding spacers that were wide enough to mimic the width of the sissy bar legs, because the luggage rack mounts to the inside of the sissy bar. The other issue came in that the sissy bar also adds some structural strength to the frame rails, which are made of aluminum and chrome plated. Mine bent after 2 seasons with luggage in the trunk. If you are looking to carry some cargo, get a Wompus Rack.
