2011 C50T - pressing the ignition button did nothing

760 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  DCinCT
Took a really long drive. Like hella long from Boston to Philly and back.

About half way stopped to my get gas. Turned the key. Got the lights. Put up the kick stand. Put the kill switch to on. Listened to it spin up the fuel pump. Depressed clutch. Hit the ignition…nothing. Like absolutely no response.

it eventually started up after turning everything off and on. But it happened again and it took a lot of fiddling to get it to work. I was not looking forward to trying to pop the clutch on that big heavy beast.

Not sure where to start. Based on previous threads I’m thinking I should open the kill/ignition box to check the contacts. But any advice would be welcome.

My guess -- one or another safety switch is going south. Can't be more helpful, sorry...

I know from experience you do NOT want to try to roll-start it!
Yeah. I weigh 160lb soaking wet. I just hope somebody films it if it happens. At a minimum I can bring hilarity to the world.
The kickstand switch is a common culprit.

had a similar issue on my c90 last year...turned out to be the clutch switch. May want to also open up the starter switch and spray the area with electrical contact spray...good luck.

Me too man.
I noticed that on my 2011. I just jerked the bike slightly and it started right up...happened twice in two months....maybe caught between gears somehow....
at some point if its not addressed you will regret not having AAA,,,for the price of membership, in cases like these, almost a no brainer to know theres a way you will get the mc home or to a place to have it repaired... when it happened to me, I brought the mc in to find out the issue and they couldn't find the cause, kept it several days and would go out every few hours and it would start right up..they told me to come pick up the mc, and told me next time it won.t do anything have it towed in...so the next time it happened I had it towed and they were able to locate the issue. Have used AAA for the mc several times and its nice piece of mind.
Before you go spending money on AAA, check your insurance policy. Most insurance these days includes tow coverage.

That's a good call out. My transmission is...quirky. It sometimes likes to get into neutral and needs me to move the bike forward or backward a couple of inches to get the gears to line up. She's just a big fan of neutral.

I cleaned the contacts and haven't had any issues since. But to Whiskey's point above, AAA sits in the back pocket at all times.

It was for me, too.

Definitely check with your insurance to see if you have roadside assistance/towing. If you don't, it can usually be added for a negligible amount. It's well worth it, and if you need to use it, one time pays for all.

Regarding AAA motorcycle/RV coverage...be careful. They do a good job, but the rules for coverage seem to vary from state to state.
In my case, after a trial period (during which time I actually had to use it) I called them to purchase the plan, and they told me that I had to buy additional coverage for every single licensed driver in my family, four at the time, even though no one besides me was licensed to ride a motorcycle. This raised the price significantly. AAA insisted, because that was the rule....and there was no getting around it.
I found later that AAA in other states had no such rule.

So, do your homework.

and I replaced the starter solenoid under the seat. cheap fix...also in Florida batteries only last 3 years...

wondering if the issue/problem has repeated itself or if you found out the problem?
