2008 M50, No Start, No lights, Nada!

Hey there! Hope everybody is well,

It's a pretty short story and it goes like this. I rode home from work with nothing unusual occurring, I pulled into the garage, turned off my bike. It was storming here the next few days so it sat in the garage. The weekend rolled around and it was nice, so I thought I would go for a ride. Hopped on the bike, turned the key and the bike primed itself and everything lit up as always, and the speedo performed it's check where it goes all the way to the right and bounces back to zero. When I hit the start button it sounded like it was firing up and then the next second, everything just cut off. Like a light switch was turned off. I turned the key back to off and then to on, but absolutely nothing happened, no sound of the bike priming, no lights on the gauge or the gas tank, no headlights, no running lights, no taillight, no horn, absolutely nothing worked. I check the battery and it is perfectly fine. I checked all fuses and nothing is blown. I read here on the forum about a fix for a common issue with this ignition switch. On that fix there was mention that the only lights they had on were the tail lights, however, I have NO lights on. Nevertheless, I took it apart and there was VERY LITTLE corrosion but I went ahead and performed the fix anyway and put it back together. It was all for not because I still got zilch. I'm thinking it could be the starter relay but was wondering if anybody else has come across something like this or similar.

If you have any suggestion, i'm all ears.

Thank you!

Jon

Welcome from Kennesaw GA!

This sounds a lot like there was a sudden break in the electrical wiring, like a fuse blew. Since you've checked all of them, I'd suspect either the ignition switch burned out, or a wire came loose somewhere. Have you tried putting a voltmeter on the starter to see if it gets 12v when you hit the ignition switch? I'm not sure what fix you did on the ignition switch, but I know they are notorious for actually melting down on the inside, especially if you've got extra doo dads connected to the circuit.
There is a separate 30A fuse on the starter, which is not located in the fuse box. A box of doughnuts says this is your problem.

Battery connection snds like
another good possibility...wonder if he recently had to disconnect the terminals for whatever reason and just didn't secure them back on tight enough...has been the cause once or twice in my years with my vol...one really has to tighten those bolts...still betting on skraps suggestion of the unmentioned fuse...hope theres a double chocolate donut in that dozen...if there is I got first dibs...

Hello Jon,
I had the same issue on my 2009 M90 quite a while ago. I had not ridden the bike for some time, replaced the battery and put battery on trickle charge. Turned the key and the bike primed itself and everything lit up as always, and the speedo performed it's check where it goes all the way to the right and bounces back to zero. I went looking for a blown fuse, but didn't find any blown. Just unhooked the battery after I discovered the tail light lit when I went into the garage to get something from the car. I subsequently unhooked the battery and left it to wait for my son to come and explore for the 30 amp master fuse. We found it, checked it, found it was not blown, replaced it anyway. Then turned the key and the bike primed itself and everything lit up as always, and the speedo performed it's check where it goes all the way to the right and bounces back to zero. When I hit the start button it sounded like it would fire up, but I didn't start it, as in the mean time I discovered extensive debris in the gas tank. At this point in time I need to remove the gas tank and completely clean the interior of the tank, replace the fuel filter, flush the fuel lines before starting the bike.
Good luck in your investigation. Cheers.
so...any update on your issue with some of the suggestions offered?
starter solenoid with the two 30 amp fuses
So yea I know this thread is older than my bike butt.....
I am having the exact problem. I am going to check out my ignition switch if I ever get a day off. Just wondering if anyone has any new insight? My fuses are good even the 30A under my seat. Nothing works no lights, no fuel pump, no turn signals, nothing.
Like I said I'm going to tear apart the ignition to start but any other ideas are very welcomed.

Dead battery
sorry to read its still not running...
It was running but now it's not again. I'm going to pull the ignition tomorrow to verify it's the culprit before I spend the $200 on a new one but I'm pretty sure the switch gave out. I'm on graveyards right now so finding time to monkey with it is difficult. I'll let y'all know what I find.
Ok so the switch seems to work fine as it has full resistance when off and gains resistance when switched on. Also I jumped the red to the orange and still have nothing. My fuses are all good and my grounds all seem fine. Any ideas guys?
Ok so my battery went. I had 14.3 volts everywhere I looked and I traced it everywhere. Must have been a bad cell because a new battery did the trick. Now just got to keep an eye on my charging system. Anyway have a good day all.
