Hope everything works out all for the best and glad you are reasonably well. I had an unintended dismount when I found a patch of what we affectionately call "blow sand". It tends to pile up around corners of buildings and bridges around here. I was young and dumb and did not have any gear on. Other than a large scar on my leg, I recovered well though. Chin up and get back on.

While I am here, I would like to take some time and address the road condition you encountered. I am a highway construction inspector. I have many times brought unsafe conditions to the attention of contractors, government workers, etc. I am shocked at the number of times the response was something like "The cars will be slowed and it should be no problem." My next question is usually "What happens if a motorcycle comes through here?" The response is usually "OHHH..." as in, "I didn't think of that."

As I do not believe in unneccessary lawsuits, this is another area where we can enlighten those around us. Fifteen years ago, I was on a job were an uneven lane condition existed in a merge area. The workers did their best to leave a ramp so cars could get over the transition. Well that night in the dark, on an angle, changing elevation, a rider went down.

I have never forgotten this and I do my very best to make sure everyone I work with takes motorcycles into consideration whenever there is a hazard condition. I believe the pothole you encountered needs to be brought to the attention of the responsible parties so they to can learn to address this for rider safety in the future.

Now leaving soap box.

Sorry to read about your misfortune, glad to see your still looking forward to riding again. I hope your healing well (prayers sent), Please do investigate the possability of getting restitution for the unsafe road, your insurance will try to persue it why not you too, also your insurance will probabily go up on your next bike if they find that it was your fault so do your best to make it the road dept. problem.

Glad you are alive, and on the mend. Thanks for sharing your story, I haven't been riding but a year and I remember each one of these and put em in the back of my head.

Dood - glad you are alive and will heal up. One question I have is would you have a case against the roads dept for leaving the road like that? Seems covering a pothole that large with loose gravel is asking for an accident.

Appreciate you sharing this - helps the rest of us out and could very well keep someone from an accident.

From what I have heard and read, it is nearly impossible to file a lawsuit against a road dept, lots of loopholes, etc.

Glad you are going to be alright, sorry for the accident.

Thank you all for the advice and well wishes.

I owe you all an update:

Road rash healed nicely. After the road rash healed (the itchies are a Beeyotch!) and the pain meds wore off I'm still having pain and swelling in my left shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle and foot. I saw an ortho specialist Monday and they are doing MRI's tomorrow and start PT on Monday.

As far as lawsuits n highway dept there's nothing they will do and I just don't have the time or energy to fight it. Have a lot of other stresses in my life right now that are higher priorities. I have learned when in doubt turn around and don't chance it.

My insurance paid for the bike, accessories and helmet. After looking at different metric mid-range bikes I went with and found a really good deal on an 09 Vulcan custom. It's what I originally wanted but couldn't find one at the time. I loved my C50 and it'll always be my first. And I'm hear to tell you, this forum and the members here have always been supporting, encouraging and inspiring. I will always lurk and offer my assistance here where I can.

I did pick up a new helmet, real MC shoes, and Kevlar jeans.

This time I'm gonna try keeping it shiny side up! Lol

Thanks again to everyone who has posted.

Hey, at least you won't be scrapping any perfectly good C50's now! ;)
only joking... glad you're feeling better. Those Vulcans are nice bikes. Stick around.
