Hey Guys,
I really hate to sound ignorant but im trying to figure this out. What exactally does the Gas Cap mod do?

Nate
The gas cap mod adds a bit of Loctite to the screw that holds on your key flap on the gas cap. This keeps it from coming loose and flyin' off at 65 MPH.
Mine is guaranteed to hold for speeds up to and including 80 MPH, I got the new super-duty, new-and-improved unit.

Just did mine. Took mine apart, seemed to already have some loctite, and was not loose. Anyway, added some more loctite and retightened everything back down. Cheap and easy insurance!

Just completed the gas cap mod on my 07 C50T using Snorky's instructions. Incredibly easy. It turned out that my cap had the locktight on the screw. I re-applied, re-assembled and good to go.

Thank you Snorky for the great directions.

Leave it to me!!!! I lost that little clip. I guess my 2007 probably didn't need this mod. I could barely break loose the screw the gets the loctite. I had to pick up the cap and brace it against my body to get the screw loose. I forgot that I had carefully placed the clip in it's assigned spot. Have no Idea where that tiny thing is now. Any thoughts as to whether this clip is a vital component?

Something tells me that you are going to be the one to answer your own question. :)

I have not earthly idea if it is vital or not.

clip

that clip is very important. your bike will use more gas if the clip isn't installed just like it came from the factory. good luck finding it.

I'd do the Gas Cap Mod right now!

I would do the mod sooner than later; Once I learned of the Locktite Job, I ignored that. Came home one summer afternoon after riding for 30 min. and Then...looking on the road for 2 1/2 hours for the lock lid, right after a RR Xcrossing. In the next 24 hors I found out how much a locking gas cap cost to replace- my wife urged me to look again for it... we went back to the place and she found it in less than 20 minutes of looking. Thought it was a goner and I would be out like, a hundred bucks... It takes only minutes.[/list]

It was nice to have instructions. but in my case 06 C50 the two screws you say not to remove are in fact the ones to remove to get to the the small screw needing lock tite. I couldn't even turn mine without stripping it so I left well enough alone.

Im gonna be a little bit of a wanker and say that this is not a mod. Adding loctite is a great idea to everything except carburetor screws, exhaust bolts and a few other random bolts. So everyone doing this I say congrats on PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE.

Who has really modified their gas cap to do something?

Hey I could be wrong. But rarely

This is the first I heard the 07 gas cap was different than other years so you will need to remove those 2 screws. Do a little more searching and you will find the original instructions.

I can't recommend this repair strongly enough. I just did it after my key cover came off at the gas station just a half hour ago. This is the second gas cap I've owned (I had to buy a whole new set after replacing my ignition) and I did this mod on the first one so I knew exactly what happened right away. Fortunately I was parking and didnt lose it.

Just do it or you will be sorry later.

Once again, the data available from members on this website provides priceless "fix it" or "how to" info. Great illustration. Thanks a lot! :applause:
