This happened a few months ago, but I think it wise to post to keep it fresh in the minds of readers.
A coworker, I won't mention any names, BRIAN, ... went out and purchased a Ducati for some weekend riding. He purchased, a set of leathers, jacket with Kevlar inserts, pants, and a good set of boots, had a helmet, good set of gloves with Kevlar knuckle protection, all top of the line equipment.
He worked on his bike. Then decided to run it around the block just to test and confirm he had everything back together and running right. He grabbed his helmet and jumped on the bike.
Didn't see him at work for 2 weeks. When we called him he stated he had been in an accident on his Ducati and would be in on the following Monday.
He sent some pics of his injuries. Road rash along the right leg, right side of is back and surprising to me, (not everyone at work caught this), he had road rash between his toes and on the side of his foot.
I asked him what happened, he said he slid out when riding over a manhole cover in a turn leaning the bike over. I asked him how fast he was going to mess up his leathers to cause the road rash and how his toes were messed up. It looked to me as though someone had run over his foot and hit the brake grinding them and his boot into the asphalt.
He replied, he was only going about 30mph, but wasn't wearing any of his equipment. No leathers, no boots, no gloves, ... just short pants a tee shirt and flip-flops. He was just going around the block and didn't think he would need them.
Totaled his 2009 Ducati, $3000+ in medical bills.
Just goes to show you, you can't ass-u-me that it will be ok just going around the block for a quickie test run without the right equipment. Anything can happen.
ALWAYS WEAR YOUR PROTECTION !!!
