One who didn't make it ....

This occurred April 07 of this year to a friend of ours. I decided even though it's been awhile, I should post it..... hoping that it may help someone else avoid it.

4 lane one way street. No other real traffic. Occurred in the afternoon on a sunny nice day. SUV in the far right lane.... bike in the 2nd lane from the left side of the road. Riding nearly even / parallel with each other. 18 yr girl in the SUV , decides to turn left. ..... hits our friend on the bike. He tried to steer away from her, had a helmet on, but only so much you can do in that flash of a second. She hit him and the impact ejected him from the bike. It was said that she may have been on a cell phone.

Making a left turn, from the far right lane of the road on a 4 lane one way street.

He died about 5-6 hrs later in the hospital.

I will point out, this is one reason I NEVER ride along side a vehicle or parallel with them. . They are either in front of me, or I'm in front of them, even if in different lanes. Period. I will slow down, speed up, go down another street or whatever I have to do to avoid that. This is one of the reasons why.

Passengers on Flight 93 are my heros.

Sorry to hear about your friend, that's horrible, but it is a good lesson. You're right about hovering next to a vehicle. I'll even say that if I'm in a situation like rush hour on the interstate and I can't avoid that, I vary my speed. Either pass or be passed, never stay next to them. Thanks for sharing this.

sorry to read that about your friend...and yes people do the strangest things...its possible he was in her blind spot...just a reminder to all to be aware that if they can't see you, you're a sitting duck.

Whats the big hurry...slow down and enjoy the ride!

Tragic story but one people need to learn from. Don't trust anyone on the road with you.

I can head East or West, it doesn't matter as long as it's on 2 wheels.

Sorry this happened to your friend. That driver could have hit anything, even causing a car passenger to bang a head against door windows which could cause major damage to a person.

Plan for tomorrow and live for today.

Very sorry for the loss of your friend. I try NEVER to ride parallel with another vehicle, for exactly this reason.

So sorry to hear!

Sometimes in heavy traffic (not the case here) riding beside a car is unavoidable. Just be very careful and always minimize the dangers.
Riding in Memphis on the slab had a lady force me out of my lane and I do not see how she could not see me as I was looking at her front bumper. Reason I upgraded horn. Had to squeeze between a truck with Huge bumpers and a car, who fell back when he finally realized what was going on.

Thanks for posting this.
Although tragic, a very good reminder to us all. I try not to ride beside anyone as well, even in heavy traffic. I prefer to be a little bit ahead as opposed to behind. I figure that way I'm out of the blind spot.
