Nobody is born into this life knowing how to act; we all need role models. Evidently, from everything I've read since serendipitously stumbling into being accepted as part of this great "family" just a few months ago, Zookoff was all that and more. I expected to get some good advice and ideas for mods, etc from this group, but not a role model.

Can someone you've never met even serve as an example? Most religions would say yes, I suppose, and I admit I would have to agree with them, in a way. Am I suggesting a cult of Zook? Not really. I kinda feel it's dangerous to "model" ourselves after anyone, no matter who they are.

So what's with the role model comments? Well, all I know is that for anyone to have affected this group of people as much he did, Zane must have done something right. Most likely, a damn lot of stuff. Does it really matter what stuff precisely? So I can copy it? No. I think most of us already know right/wrong and good/bad, when we can remember to think about it. (Kind of like that "Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," if you've ever seen it.) What someone like Zook does is just prove to us, REMIND US, that it IS possible to live a "good" life in the real sense.

I didn't know him in person or even online at the time, and I hope both his "families" will forgive my self-assumed familiarity in even commenting in this thread. But, just as others have said, I've come to know him in a way, and appreciate him for the life he must have led, and the way he comes through in those I am fortunate enough to have a chance to get to know. That still mysterious name has even come through the wind to my ears while riding on occasion, leaving me to think, "What should I be doing to be remembered this way by the folks in my own life?"

And THAT is what a role model is all about, isn't it?

So, now that that itch is scratched... I've got to know... and I haven't seen it explained anywhere (adding, "of course I could have missed it," hopefully to ward off any severe scoldings)...

where does the nickname Zookoff come from anyways?!

- lookin' forward to ridin' with him some day down that big highway in the sky.

Have I told you all lately that I love you all bunches... Thank you all for being part of my family....
Thanks for posting that, Julie. I remember the shock like it was just yesterday and how it was like losing one of my best friends even though I never met him personally. I remember him often, especially when I'm on the Vol.

Thanks Jules ...

I needed a few tears this morning while catching up ... brought up some very fine rememberances of Zane ... and some very fine rememberances of everyone else ... great group ...

... interestingly enough ... I am in the middle of modding my black beauty ... I had forgotten that Zane used that term as well ... and the reference to our bikes as our steed ... now I am sure I know what color she will be (remain) and I am certainly going to stay with the "steed" theme ... I was debating a change ... looks like Zook had a say in it as well ... lol ...

While at the Texas Southern Cruisers Reunion this weekend, they had a memorial table for all of our fallen brothers & sisters. I snapped a couple of pics of Zanes memorial. The pics are up in my gallery. Sorry for the quality, they were taken with my cell-phone in a dark room.

That is one dude that I wish that I could have met. His stories from the old VOL site still give me chills.

Cool - thanks for the shots hannover.

Thanks for the pics Han.....I still am touched...I don't know if you all remember what I had written on Zane's headstone...but...It sasy "You have no idea". Zane really didn't know how much he had made an impression in so many peoples lives....Believe it or not...Zane used to get so discouraged with himself...he always was a perfectionist...hated making mistakes...he always wanted to "make a diffrence"...I just wish he was here or I hope he knows now...how much his insight on life in general and how he tried to live it has touched people, even people that had never gotten the chance to meet him.....Zane IS and ALWAYS will be special! I love all of you for keeping Zook "alive"...for wanting to use him as a role model.....respecting his thoughts...his feelings...Thank you so much.

MrsZookoff
PS Our 6th Wedding Anniversary was October 7.....I can't say that I celebrated...but....That day will ALWAYS be remembered and be a very special day for me.

I'm never riding alone...Zane is always riding with me.
