Ticking is normal for these engines. Excessive ticking is not. It all depends on where the noise is coming from. In the upper cylinder excessive ticking usually is the result of a valve problem. In the lower motor, it is usually a loose cam chain. Neither is particularly catastrophic (yet), but needs attention. The best way to narrow it down is to use a screwdriver as a stethoscope. Put the tip of the screwdriver on several places on the motor and put the handle in your ear. Move it around until you pinpoint to source of the ticking.

If you don't know if the valves have been adjusted, I would start there.
