VL800 vacuum system setup

The triple connector (the F-type fitting) on the vacuum system was broken when I bought my 2002 VL800. I replaced it with a new tee connector. I know that two of the hoses run to 1) the petcock, and 2) the PAIR valve, but I am unsure where the third connects (picture below). I connected it to the hose that runs to the bottom of the carb (the long hose that wraps around the carb in the second attached picture). This is near where the vacuum line for the fuel pump runs to the intake, so it seemed a likely candidate.

Is this correct? Or did I set this up totally wrong? The bike wasn't running when I bought it. I've got it running now as long as I pull on the starter enricher (i.e. choke), but it dies under more than a little throttle. I'm not sure if it's a vacuum issue or a carb issue. I already cleaned the carb but I may not have cleaned it thoroughly enough.

Any ideas?

Welcome to VR.

You should be able to find most of the information you need at this link.

Volusia Service Book

It likely won’t answer every question though.

Yeah, I can't seem to find a vacuum hose diagram in there. No idea why, but I suppose it is a pretty simple system.

I just re-watched the Maraggie video because I couldn't remember him undoing this hose, either. Looks like it just pops free when he lifts the tank at 5:54 (
). So taking into account both that video and the fact that it DOES start now (with some choke), I'll say that the vacuum system is hooked up properly. Guess I'll focus on the carb now. I think the diaphragm may not be seated right and is not providing the pressure to retract the jet needle, causing a lean condition when I open the the throttle. Just a hunch.
