Can someone plz recommend a Tool Kit for my Suzuki Boulevard C50 2009 preferably under $100. I live in an apt building and not going to put my bike apart on the street. I need the tool kit for minor maintenance/ repairs.
Mine went MIA before I got my bike. I always wondered what Suzuki put in their kits. I know it has some sort of tool for the shock preload and some Allen wrenches, but other than that I have no idea what they included.
One of the Allen wrenches is the tool needed to remove the front wheel axle bolt. I would add a fuse puller, Philips driver for the battery lug bolts, Allen wrenches to remove the side covers, flat head driver, electrical tape, extra fuses, brake bleeder screw wrench, and a phone number for roadside assistance...
Hard to carry a hammer but it would be necessary to punch out the axle bolt if you ever wanted to remove the front wheel while on the road.
I never used or found a reason to use the shock load tool.
I'd also add allen wrenches for the seats and either needle-nose or some other sort of pliers.
Bought my '03 with at least 2 previous owners and I'm flabbergasted that it still had the original tool kit. Even came with the registration and insurance info from 2nd guy back because previous guy never got into the toolkit box!
Look on ebay, one will come up. There is pretty much everything you need in there.
The shock preload tool works great, and I remember right, I did use the tool kit to remove the front wheel when I changed the tire.
I have the original tool kit still in its original location and all tools including the shock spanner, are still there.
I also carry my own small selection that includes a range of stubby combination wrenches, a set of metric Allen wrenches with ball ends, a mini socket set that includes hex driver bits of various types including Torx, a 6" adjustable wrench and a 6" visegrip. Those all fit in two small (8") zipper pouches from Home Depot.
The feeler gauges and adjuster wrench I made for adjusting the valves also fit in the little box for the mini socket set.
The standard tool kit, IMHO, is almost useless. The tool to change the shock spring preload is $14 alone on Ebay and worth the money if you occasionally ride 2 up. The wrenches work, but there are better choices. The pliers are pretty much useless, (pressed metal) but will compress the vacuum line clamps to pull them off. The screwdriver is almost useless, won't loosen any nut/bolt because the diameter of the handle doesn't allow for much grip for the torque needed. The allen wrenches, for the most part, are to short.
Over the last couple of years, I put together some additions to the standard toolkit that I use more than the tool kit itself. Most of these fit in the OEM toolkit bag, the rest I put an another bag and keep in a saddle bag or the trunk. I have a traditional tool bag, but need to figure out where I want to install it.
1. Ratchet wrench with adjustable length handle. Dual drive 1/4 and 3/8.
2. Deep well sockets, 18mm, 13mm, 12mm, 10mm (3/8" drive set)
3. Short sockets, 8mm, 10mm (1/4" drive)
4. 1/4" drive 3" extension, and 3/8" drive 6" extension
5. Allen wrench set (Standard ball end, long) - Metric ( 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm)
6. 12 mm Allen Wrench for front axle.
7. Wrenches - Metric - 8mm/10mm/12mm/14mm - (Box and Open)
8. 6-in-1 Screwdriver (rubber grip/handle) - Best if Metric.
9. 27mm Long handle box end wrench (rear axle nut).
10. Crescent/Spanner (10in)
11. Feeler gage set.
12. Needle nose pliers w/wire cutter
13. Victor pocket Knife
Most all of these I purchased at Harbor Freight when the items go onsale. I don't think I paid more than $8 for any of the wrench sets, except for the long handle wrench set that was $20 and I don't keep it on the bike except for long distance rides.
I don't keep all of the wrenches in each set on the bike. Just the ones I use that fit the nuts and bolts that seem to come loose occasionally. Add a bottle of Blue thread locker (Locktite or Permatex), a small roll of Duck tape, and roll of electrical tape and you should be set for just about anything.
Oh hells, I've taken my tool kit out and used it just for kicks when working on the bike.
The tools are pretty cheap looking, but will do the job if needed. I have adjusted the shock many times and the pre-load tool works fine. The screw drivers are a bit lame with the small handle, but that's what gloves are for ;-) . Also, the "tire irons" work pretty well....but that was on a scooter tire I did- not the Volusia tire. It could be done if you were in Siberia and a tiger was eyeing you as food.
I really have never had to do any major surgery on the road, but it's nice to have the tools in there in case you meet a fellow biker who needs assistance.
If you're making up your own toolkit, a tire repair/inflator is a nice practical addition.
If you are just starting out, the Stockton tool kit at Cyclegear ($40 on sale) is a good place to start. Then purchase a good used tool box and start loading it up with tools purchased as you need them. Tools are like oil, a lot of differing opinions, and quite a lot of heated discussion. The rule I have used and it has served me well for many years, if you are going to use the tool infrequently, Harbor Freight quality is usually good enough. If you will be using it a lot (like socket sets and screwdrivers), spend the money and get a good, quality set.
You don't have to purchase it all at once. Just get the tools as you need them.
This, of course, is for tools kept at home. I do carry the Stockton kit (with a few custom additions) with me on the bike at all times.
I know this is an old thread and am wondering if my post will pop it back up on the thread board.. I also bought a bike (2006 C50T) that's missing the took kit and I think the cover to the tool kit, could anyone verify that there is a Cover on the box where the tool kit/registration goes? I'm fairly sure there is a cover that goes on the box that interacts with the locking left upper side cover (that covers the box). I went to the local dealer and we couldn't pull up the correct diagram that shows the cover, we did pull one up that shows the box. Thanks ahead of time..
Yes - there is a black cover that goes over the tool storage area, that gets covered by the exterior cover with the key. You could probably find one on Ebay.
(Edit - there are 13 of them for sale on Ebay right now)
