fuel pump problem I think

has anyone had to replace the pump under the seat on a 2001-2004 vl 800, carbed, bike wont start, and have found I have no suction from the carb to the petcock to open the petcock up, checked the filter in the tank, clean. have inspected and changed out 2 hoses running to the pump, took the pump apart and looks fine I see nothing wrong with it, bike is a 2002 with 17,000 miles on it, stage 3 done by me in 2004 disabled pair valve around same time, I put a piece of hose on the suction nipple of the petcock sifened on it while I cranked the bike, started right up.... put hose from carb back on and it dies when the bowl empties... sounds like the pump or something screwy with the carb, oh I have cleaned and checked the carb at least 3 times today, any input appreciated... thanks tj

problem is getting reported more and more. There are several current threads about misfiring, rejetting, spitting, popping, and I think they are related to the pump. I think the vac signal is too weak for some reason to properly activate the POS fuel pump, perhaps due to age or marginal pump. Mine would be impossible to start after 2 weeks in the garage. I wanted to throw it on the trash heap several times.

Hey guys, I've been learning as I go with this 2001 volusia 800 and I think my fuel pump is out but I don't know how to test it. Any information would be great

There are many ways to test it.
Most likely in the end you'll have to pull it out to inspect.
Since you have it out at that point, you might as well just go ahead and replace it.

But before you do that, check your fuses.
It's also possible the relay pooped out.

But if you don't hear the pump come on when you turn the key, there's a problem somewhere.

Did you last run the bike with a really low fuel level?
That'll kill a pump.
You also need to check wiring.
Again, the tank will probably have to come off.

Back to square one if you're pulling off the tank.

2001 has a mechanical fuel pump.
Apply vacuum to the vacuum line and you should get fuel flow through the pump. If not then you have a pump issue, if there is flow check the petcock, make sure it has flow as well.

my 2004 has difficulty starting if t hasn't been started in a week or two it has a gravitational fuel pump that works off of a vacuum so I start mine every 2 or 3 days no problem if not I pull the air cleaner off and squirt some either in it .
well this is what was explained to me whether its true r not I don't know but it works for me.

Sometimes I just skip every other word in order to read faster.
I figure since half of them are misspelled anyways....
