Shifting issues

I have a 99 1400 Intruder that rides great other than a sticky shifter from time to time.

The issue is in 1st and 2nd gear. When I shift to first or second the shifter stays in the down position and does not rebound. This is not a huge problem in first as you have to up shift regardless. But if I shift to second and then need to shift to first it is very annoying to have to up shift before I can downshift into first.

Any thoughts?

Pull the linkage apart and grease it.

Don't use heavy grease. Lockease with graphite works well.

I had the same issue on my -04 VL800. Apparently there is no bushing for it. I did take the shifter and bracket off and then cleaned up the shaft. If was rusty and had some gouges in it. I sanded it and then filed it smooth. I used spray lithium grease on it and the bike shifts like new. Thanks to all for the advice.

Garage
They do make a bushing for it and Gman seems to make the best.

I can head East or West, it doesn't matter as long as it's on 2 wheels.
