need some opinions valve issue

Ok guys and gals,
I have a 04 Volusia limited, I had the valve adjustment done last year cuz I figured the p/o never had them done and I was hearing A valve tapping faintly. After reading on here about this being a sewing machine verbal engine I had not worried about it. I took it to a highly recommended motor builder for the job, when I was talking to him about it he new the time intervals for the routine maint on them and has done several of these bikes. He did the job and I went on my merry way.
Now that was last spring, fast forward to yesterday. I was going thru the bike., I.E. did front pads, changed oil and brake fluid, plugs along with a new set of tires.
Here's what I'm questioning, the rear plug looks like brand new. The front has a lot of black buildup in the electrode. The bike has never been sluggish or hard to start anything that would concern me other then that tapping. It has 13,000 miles on it. I'm thinking that front cylinder either has a valve going bad or is bad. Maybe the intake wondering what you all think?

Thanks for the info in advance......Tim

The black could be just a fuel/combustion issue with other causes but your best diagnostic for what you are wondering about is to have a HOT compression test done and also a leakdown test done - both tests done on both cylinders.

Once that is done then you know what mechanical foundation you have to work with and you can move on to other possible causes if required.

Also, a recheck on the valve clearances would be in order - even the best can have a slip of the wrench... and the "sewing machine sound'' is not a reliable measure of an accurate valve adjustment.

Then again, a clear picture of both plugs would be helpful. it may be closer to normal than you think....
