New Rider Considering Volusia 800

Hi gang,

New Rider here...considering purchasing a 2003 Volusia 800.

Wondering what caveats I should be aware of....or if y'all think this is a great bike for what it is!

Welcome from Kennesaw GA!

I happen to think it's a great bike in its price range.

I think you'd be happier with a 2009 with lots of goodies.
You might check the bikes for sale section.

Welcome.

welcome...good bike... you won't go wrong ...be aware you are purchasing a bike 17 years old that may /probably need normal maintenance done that may not have been done by previous owner...expensive?...maybe/maybe not...depending on what you are spending vs another vol/c50 that may not require as much work may in the end be a cheaper investment...good luck.

Yes, thanks for the reminder. And thanks for the input. Seems people really stand by these bikes.
Any thoughts on comparison to Yamaha custom V-Star from the same period?

I think for the money the entire Volusia-and-descendants line is a screaming good value. I won't say better bikes aren't out there, mind you, but a whole lot more money only gets you a little bit nicer bike. I'd agree that a newer bike -- say an '08 or'09 -- might be more trouble-free, but that's not to put down the older ones at all. A well-maintained, well-priced '03 would be something I would at least look at.

My personal example can give you some idea of what's out there. A year ago I bought a 2008 C50, well-maintained, always garaged, new tires, windshield, saddlebags, good cover, gloves (2 pair), helmet (size Small but maybe some elf will want a ride), 13K miles -- for $2750. In 3500 miles since purchase the only expenses I have had have been for an oil/filter/fluids change and gas. It is a solid, comfortable, reliable machine. Nothing fancy, just really good.
