Do tires expire in 5 year?

I just bought a new to me 08 C50. It has date code 2013 Pirelli MT66 Route 66 tires. They look like new. No rot, wear, or damage. Looking trough the last guys records (which were fairly meticulous) he has around 1500 miles on them and replaced them in July 2013.

I know 5 years is the consensus lifespan but I have seen some say longer.

I'll probably get new ones due to age and tires not being something I want to mess around with. But curious of what the opinion of the form is?

After 5 years, replace the tires regardless of remaining tread. Period. The elastomers and rubber compounds break down from heat, ozone, moisture and other contaminants. This in turn weakens the tire and can lead to catastrophic failure. On a car, you have the safety of three other tires to help you keep control. On a bike, you don't have the luxury.

It is a matter of safety, not dollar spend.

I can head East or West, it doesn't matter as long as it's on 2 wheels.

It's a sad thing they don't make tires like they used to.
I have some tires (not bike) that are close to 20 years old on an a broke down truck.
I'd probably drive on them if they fit something that runs.

There is truth to that, Joe. In the dark ages, tires were made out of things that would last. Durability was key we didn't pay any attention to things like pollution or environmental impact. But that changed in the 70s and we began substituting "green" technologies in manufacturing. This led to a new generation of environmentally friendly, but not quite as durable products, tires included.

You also have to remember that the whole Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy was caused by "green" materials. The foam insulation on the external fuel tank was originally made with formaldehyde. Well, that kills baby polar bears, so the environazis came up with a "just as good" solution using "green" materials and we all saw what happened. A 6lb chunk of foam came off of the tank at more than 15,000 mph and smashed into the leading edge of the port wing of the orbiter. The astronauts were dead and just didn't know it yet.
