Final drive for dj drive mod

I have a vs1400 drive sitting around I need to get rid of. Was going to do the mod on my bike but if everything works out I’m planning on buying a c90 so I have no use for this drive. $100 plus shipping costs

It will not fit on your bike without modification. There are three routes you can take, all require machine tools.

1: cut the shaft in half, remove 5/16" of material. Sleeve, weld and lathe the shaft for balance (original DJ mod).
2: cut the shoulder on the input side off the shaft back 5/16".
3: Remove the drive coupler and cut 5/16" off of the input side of the coupler.

Once the machining is done, you then have to elongate the holes in the frame to accommodate the larger bolts. The fake swing arm then needs to be modified or discarded as it will not fit the new drive.

Overall, it is a worthwhile modification but it is not without drawbacks. The decreased gear ratio will cost you some power which you will feel if heavily loaded or riding up hill. You will also require more clutch than before to get going. It will not make the bike faster nor will it allow you to "keep up with bigger bikes" on the highway. It will reduce engine vibration at a given speed and make the ride more comfortable.

i was under the impression that the final drive mods were of the "plug-n-play" type...undo my old rear gears and drive shaft and plug in the "modified parts"...sort of a turn key operation...i must have misunderstood the forums about the gear change as it seemed it was like changing an air filter....take the old one out and throw it away...put the new filter in and drive away...so am i on the same page as everyone else now...there is no such thing as a "plug-n-play" gear modification available????

You can locate Cory on this forum.
He will sell you a plug and play final drive.
Unbolt your old one, do some minor filing on the mounting holes on your bike, bolt in the new one, go ride your bike and smile.

I have just spent a large amount of time pouring through the threads about the moded drives, and then I saw this one. I have not come across the measurement of 5/16 for removal of material for the BB coupler method. Has this been altered since his research? I know BB and Viper said that there is a great deal for surface area on the engine side of the u joint vs the shaft from the engine, but 3/16 of an inch is all I have ever come across for the B&B coupler method.

Yes, it is 3/16” of material removed from long end of the coupler. I did the u-joint myself and if I had to do it all over again I would have the shaft modified, elongate the holes and install the drive. It was a lot of work but I was changing my rear tire and lubing my swing arm anyway.... I used a 1500 drive so I had to have a longer spacer, axle bushing and larger washer for the axle bolt.

I'm not sure how many people have done the coupler method. I would say 90-95% of people are using altered shafts, so you may not get an answer....just from lack of experience in doing it that way.
