Durango CO area

Just got back from a trip to Southwest Colorado. What an incredible area, with jaw-dropping scenery at almost every turn! We took a full-day ride on a loop north of Durango.

On the route from Durango to Ouray, there are several hairy switchbacks, with no guardrail and steep dropoffs, but very negotiable if you don't get too crazy. We enjoyed the numerous scenic overlooks along the way.

From Ouray, the route to Ridgway and and Placerville is a lot tamer, but still pretty nice. From there, Route 145 to Dolores is more awesome scenery. From Dolores back to Durango is a nice, easy ride to finish off the day.

We enjoyed spending an hour in Silverton. A bit touristy, but still lots of neat shops and interesting history. Gas stations are not all that plentiful on this loop, so don't let the tank get much lower than half. Also, many serious changes in elevation, so we dressed in layers to accommodate the wide swings in temperatures.

On another day, we swung over to Mesa Verde National Park. Great tours of the Pueblo cliff dwellings, outstanding scenery, and 50 or so miles of excellent riding roads.

EDIT: Finally remembered to include a couple of pics.

Thumbs up

I've toured that area in a Tour Bus and it is indeed a scenic area.

I didn't ride the train so 'd like to go back and ride the train.
