Day 4: Holy Shitake, what a day. Decided to sleep in this morning since it was going to be a shorter riding day. Instead of getting up at 0500, I got up at 0530. Anyway, looked out the window and it was raining. Freakin' great. It seemed like it was about done, but the clouds didn't look good at all and the wind was blowing pretty good. Got ready and ate breakfast. Sat around with about 10 other guys waiting for it to stop. It started to get a little brighter in the west, which was the direction I was heading. I became a self-appointed weatherman, looked at the clouds, checked the wind direction and decided I was gonna roll. Thought about putting my rainsuit on since it probably would start raining again but decided not to. Had some guy who wasn't even riding talking to me the entire time I was trying to get the bike loaded. Got distracted. So I finally got everything strapped down and left. I was on the road for about 15 minutes, and something just didn't feel right. I reached down with my left hand and checked the saddlebag. It was closed. I reached down with my right hand to check the other one. It wasn't closed. Crap! So I pulled over and looked in it. My rainsuit (which also had my boot covers in it) wasn't there. Double crap! I figured I hadn't gone far, so I turned around. Went back to the hotel just in case it blew off my bike and I didn't notice it. It's rolled up in a pouch. Nope, nobody turned anything in. So I got back on the interstate and rode a little slower, looking along the side of the rode. Didn't see it anywhere. Got to the point where I turned around and kept going. Couldn't do anything else anyway. About 5 minutes later, some wicked clouds came up. They looked like the ones you see in the show "Storm Chasers". I did have my eye on one that looked like it was ready to start spinning. Luckily it didn't. A little while later it did start to rain briefly. I forgot to mention that it was already chilly this morning. The rain makes it that much colder, especially when you're wearing a mesh riding jacket. Then a while later, I was in the left lane, going around a tractor trailer. I was about a third of the way passed him when I saw his left blinker come on. Figured he was just letting the car that was a little ways behind me know that he was coming over. Nope. When I was about at the half way point of passing him, he starts coming over. Crap! So I gun it to try and make it around him. I'm riding the yellow line at this point and he's still coming over. I got my horn going, and he finally sees me when I'm at the front of his truck and gets back into the right lane. He was probably about 5 ft. away from me at that point. Then a while later I see a sign for Cabela's at the next exit. Great! I can stop and get a Frogg Toggs rainsuit like I had. Of course it's about 8 miles from the exit, but hey, I need a rainsuit. I walked in and asked the waste of human flesh at the door if they have rainsuits. That would be clothing right? Uh, yeah. Turn right and go down the aisle. Ok, thanks. I see everything but rainsuits. Tracked down Skippy and asked him. Let me show you what we have left. Great, that doesn't sound good. He shows me Gortex coats. Yeah, they're nice but I'm not spending $189 just for the jacket! Do you not have Frogg Toggs? Yes, we put them away. Let me go in the back and get you a set. What color do you want? Anything but pink. Is gray ok? It's not pink, Skippy, it'll be ok. Ten minutes later: sorry, they've all been shipped back to the main warehouse. So I looked around and found some Gortex ones on sale. Got just the jacket and no pants. And a sweatshirt because it was cold riding. Stuffed the raincoat hood down the back and off I went. It makes a great windbreaker too. At precisely 70mph, the hood comes out and turns into a parachute. Ok. The faster you go, the higher up and out it goes. At 80mph, it was literally starting to strangle me. So I pulled off at the next exit. After this crappy morning so far, I needed a break. Got a bite to eat and went back out to the bike. Noticed a little flap on the back of the hood. There’s a drawstring there that you can pull and it mooshes up the hood into a little ball, most likely to prevent it from becoming a parachute/strangling machine. So I did that and got on the road again. Nice and toasty now. Somewhere I changed time zones again, so now I’m in MST. Around 1300 MST, the clouds started to clear and it got sunny again. Still not hot though. My destination today was North Platte, but I kept going another 50 miles and here I am in Ogallala. After getting here I realized that I hadn’t sung a single song the entire day. It wasn’t a happy day. Total miles traveled today: 317. Tomorrow’s destination: my hotel in Hot Springs, SD.

Hey Air4ceOne,
If you need anything while passing through Western Nebraska....Just let me know!
I'm a new member here and have been just lurking on this site for a bit and doing a fare share of riding in my free time. It's been fun reading your "road stories"!

Since you offered, how about an AT&T cell tower?!

Had to go in town and buy a cheapy Verizon phone to use while I'm out this way.

Well....I can't help you there or tell you that cell service is going to improve much the further west and north you go. Are you riding through Scottsbluff tomorrow or going a different route to the north?

I'm in Ogallala right now. I'll be taking Scenic 26 to 385 and into Hot Springs. No idea what towns I'll be passing through.

Friggin Hialrious! I'm sure that you didn't think it was funny at the time, but I'm spliitin' a gut here picturing that in my mind!

Hope that tomorrow is a better day for you. And enjoy yourself at Sturgis.

You'll be about 30 minutes to the East of me, but the good news is that you are almost there and the forecast looks like you wont have to deploy your "parachute" anytime soon. Too bad, I wouldn't mind getting that on video
Have a safe ride and enjoy the scenery!

All the locals I've talked to here have all said there's no AT&T signal in this area. I lost signal shortly after leaving Lincoln this morning and didn't have it the entire way across the state.
