%$#% Road construction

Last night on my way to my second job at the mall, I had a close call in a construction area. A riding down a four lane road with a 45 mph speed limit and I'm a couple of blocks from the mall. It is about 5:30 have a pretty good idea of the traffic flow as I have been riding this way for a couple of years. I stay in the left lane until the intersection just before the mall. Then I move to the right lane and just before the intersection it changes to six lanes and I move to the far right lane. Last night, I'm a couple blocks away and there is a sign saying the right lane is closed ahead. Traffic is slowing down as people merge to the left. I'm keeping about a 3 second gap with the car ahead of me and watching my right mirror for a chance to move the right. I'm thinking that the current right lane is closed, but the far right will still be open. As the car to my right slows down, I check my blind spot and start to lean to the right. As look back up, traffic is stopping hard ahead of me. I had just a split second to decide, stop or go. I didn't debate it. I just leaned harder and gave it a little more gas. I'm not sure how close I came to the rear bumper of the car ahead of me, as I was looking ahead, but my peripheral vision thought it was to damn close. As I came up in the right lane, I was surprised at the silence. No screeching tire. No crunching metal. I guess I made it.

Then this morning on the way to work, I'm flying along the country road. Beautiful day, sunshine, open road. Then I see the sign, Road Construction Ahead. Then Flagman Ahead. I slow down to about 35. I see the guy with the sign. He has the Slow side facing me, so I nod as I go by and he nods back. I think it is kind of odd when I see a line of cars heading toward me, but they are moving back to their side, so I just putt along. Then I see the other flagman and he has the Stop side in my direction. He sees me coming and looks confused. He glances up at his sign and kind of jumps, like Oh ****, and flips his sign around.

Czar,

Glad you made it through both incidents with no problems. I've always wondered about the second scenero. Just like you described it... one of the "sign persons" not paying attention and traffic is allowed to flow both ways in a single lane. Never heard of it happening until you posted though, so I guess it doesn't happen very often (at least I hope not!).

Engage!
