Bringing this back from the dead...again.
Well just placed my order for a 37.5 and 40 pilot jet. I rode all last year and hated the fact that I had to run the choke so much and when I shouldn't have....so it's getting to be cycle season so I better do this now.
I'll post my results when it's done. Hope it takes away the riding w/ the choke on forever and random dieing w/out the choke on.
Thanks

Got it all done w/ no problems. It was cold out so I only took it for a 5-10min ride but it allowed me to take the choke off quite a bit earlier and started way easier! Can't wait to ride more and see how it goes

So I'm ordering Jim's nekkid air box kit. I need to hold off on the Cobra pipes but need to rejet from what I've read. Will the new jetting work for both my gutted stockers and my new baffled Cobras when I get them?

Out of morbid curiosity on why my wife rode her bike with the choke on all the time, I started to think that when we bought the bike, they dun us dirt.
Back story: when we bought her K4 Volusia, we had the dealer install the KN airbox filter and V&H Cruizers. Also asked that the Dynojet jet kit be installed.
When I opened the carb up today, I found a 130 main, 27.5 pilot, and what I believe is the dynojet needle, clip on 3rd position. The idle mix screw was drilled and set to 2.75 turns. (so they did that much) This leads me to believe either
a) they stole $80 bucks from me
b) they didn't do a whole rejet
c) they are a bunch of jackasses
d) all the above.
How can I verify that the needle is in fact a dynojet needle and spring? I understand I need the 155 main and 37.5 pilot for this configuration per the matrix, so I'll end up ordering those from motorcyclecarbs.
as a side note, the float was set at 5mm, not 7mm+-.5mm as suggested in the pink book (yup, I read that thing regularly!) What effect will that have on the performace (or lack thereof) on our Volusia? I have corrected it to 7mm.

If it is a multi position needle then it is not the OEM needle. Stock has no adjustments. _________________ Dave

Does anyone have comparisons between Dynojet jets and Thunder jets?
I have a dynojet stage-1 but Thunder is telling me even the highest jet (#160) in the stage-1 kit is not enough to match the Thunder stage-3 #140 jet. I want to know if this is true.

Go here, put in your parameters and place the order. Or better yet call them and ask, maybe buy one or two jets on each side of their recommendation just in case you want to tweak.

OK, here's a question.
No idea what's in the carb now, but likely stock.
Stock exhaust.
Live at 800 ft
Got 40 to 45 mpg 2up in the mountains mixed with 65 mph rolling highway
Starts effortlessly, choke off pretty soon.
Idle mix seems OK, perhaps the tiniest bit lean
Pilot is clearly just a bit lean - hunts slightly - at 800 ft
Seems to have power on the main - less important, rarely there.
Runs better at 5000 ft, no hunting, feels maybe more torque climbing.
I'm interpreting this as a good stock setup - just a bit lean - that gives adequate performance. I could easily be wrong - never been into this bike.
I haven't generally found needle work to be all that powerful an influence on CV carbs. Secondary to jets on the last Mikuni I went through, although important.
http://motorcyclecarbs.com/VL800_Jet_Kit_P4998.cfm I am willing to try when I pull the tank and go through the valves, change plugs, change coolant. Is this a reasonable approach? I don't really want to mess under the tank often. But I'm willing to go in once this winter and tidy up everything. I figure it's an every 2 year job for coolant change, plug look, and valve check/adj.
Any really solid suggestions? If rejetting is going to hurt mileage then I'm OK with current running. Solo I don't mind, and we're mostly hitting altitude. Even at 1900 ft at Deal's Gap I'm getting plenty of useful power. _________________ Friendsville, TN - 25 miles from the Dragon
