He made it a full 1/3 mile riding pillion on my bike!
The transmission shop called a bit before noon today with news that the Accord was finally finished. Skrappy came into the room and told me to gear up, we were going to get the car. OK, no problem. He then said the three fateful words: "I'll ride pillion." My jaw dropped, the girl gasped in shock, and the boy's eyes glazed over while a twitch started in his cheek.
So we geared up, I backed the Fizzer out of the garage and started it up. I left the kickstand down while Skrap climbed aboard- and I'm very glad I did. He's not the most graceful of individuals sometimes. I did a bit of a "pre-flight" check, rocking side to side to test the weight and balance, then started down the driveway. So far, so good.
There is a stop sign immediately to the left of our driveway. At this stop, we had our first indication of a problem. The passenger is NOT supposed to put his feet down at a stop. I made the left turn, and stopped at the next sign. He did better, just an abortive twitch of the legs this time. Another left turn put us on one of the longer uninterrupted stretches of the main road out of the housing plan. Up to speed, balance is good, curve to the left coming up- and my passenger is totally rigid behind me with a death grip on the handles. I lean a bit left for the curve while accelerating smoothly, and then I have to compensate for the knee pushing me even further into the lean. The next curve is to the right, with a knee pushing me again. And that's when I heard the first whimper.
At the stop light out onto the main road, I put the bike in neutral and put down the kickstand. "OFF. NOW." He was hurt and confused, but got off the bike. I slid up to the pillion seat just as the light changed to green. Skrappy stood there protesting for a moment, until I pointed out that the cars behind us would probably like to go. So he hopped back on the bike and away we went.
He did much better than I expected, being a passenger. Maybe next time, we'll make it a full mile. _________________ Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.

Be patient...it takes time to train a good backseat rider. The day will come when you won't even notice he's there. _________________ United States Tie-Dye Czar
