OK guys, I need your advice. I did not want to post this in facebook as there are other groups in there that I did not want to share this with.
Yesterday, I talked to a few guys at the show about this. First, I've been having some health issues. I've been feeling lightheaded for a few weeks, went to the doctor, and was diagnosed with hypertension (170/110). It might be hereditary as my mother takes meds for it for decades. So now I'm taking meds for it. I still was feeling lightheaded, so the Dr referred me to a cardiologist. Had a battery of tests done, stress test on a treadmill, blood tests, echocardiogram, carotid ultrasound, and a nuclear stress test which involved a high speed scan. My next appointment with the cardiologist is not till Feb 1, where we will discuss the results. Second, I've been very unhappy with my current job, so I was looking and was offered a similar position in a growing midsize company. Overall I will be compensated more and the roles and responsibilities will be very exciting. In addition, will be working for a former colleague of mine, I do not get along with my current management. The only drawback is the job entails at least 50% travel, domestically at least, the current is like 20%, but involves international travel. I really want to take the job, I have till tomorrow to tell them if I will accept their offer, but I am really worried about my health. I did call my cardiologist on Friday if he can provide me with a preliminary result, and he told me that it seems I do not have any heart issues, and that my current lightheadedness is probably due to my blood pressure fluctuation throughout the day/ He advised to cut my meds by half and drinks lots of fluids throughout the day. So been drinking more water been feeling better, I went to the show yesterday and felt great, but here I sit writing this post lightheaded. If you were in my situation, what would you do. Looking forward to your responses.

I don't think you can be very healthy if you hate your job. Best of luck to you!

Two things jump out at me.
1) "I've been very unhappy with my current job..." 2) "...I was looking..." You didn't "sort of unhappy", you said VERY unhappy, unhappy enough that you were motivated enough to start looking elswhere. I think that is pretty significant. Only you can decide if the additional travel is worth putting up with to get away from something you are truely unhappy with. I like to travel, my job entailed travel about every 3 months for about a week at a time, I looked forward to it. You'll just have to decide, take this opportunity or keep looking, or you could take this opportunity AND keep looking, looking for something with less travel. But you are "very unhappy" in your current situation and I think you should make some sort of change. That in itself could have an effect on hypertension. Whatever you decide, good luck and hope it turns out good for you.

From my personal experience during 2011...10 years of living, breathing, eating and sleeping my job. (Japanese auto supplier) On 2 BP meds, 1 heart med, etc. May 2nd my job was 'eliminated'. Thought the world had ended. Took 2 months to just chill (6 mo. severance package helped). Accepted a job in a less technical, more traditional, field in September. On Jan 1 I was transfered to the local plant (1.4 mi from home) as Asst. Plant Manager.
Total result....No more BP meds, sleepless nights, etc. Happiness = Better Health. Good luck.

I have seen my wife deal with heath issues that came from a stress filled job environment... Simply put, a lot of stress and unhappiness is not healthy!!! I'd say, you should either bury the hatchet with your current boss in an effort to eliminate the stress, or if you can't do that, go to the greener pastures. You aren't gonna probably be traveling 50% of the time forever if the company is growing and you can advance.
Good Luck and stay healthy!!

Stress is a killer, doesn't matter how cool the job is. I spent 2.5 yrs in a brutal pressure-cooker project, the recovery from the stress takes about as long as the time spent in it. Maybe longer. There are all sorts of mental effects habits that develop from stress that can really mess things up too- all that takes time to unwind and make better.
Best thing I ever did was start an exercise and diet regieme- 30+ lbs lost since Sept and I don't notice 5+ flights of stairs in my full riding gear anymore. Greg

Top 5 Regrets of the Dying
By Bronnie Ware For many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last 3 to 12 weeks of their lives. People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five: 1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I didn't work so hard. 3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. Full article here. .

Health is number 1 as you know. Hating your job is unhealthy, (been there) . Check into RES Q 1250. I always look for a natural cure . Think of changing jobs like getting a new bike, and don't look back until you found the right one!

I'd certainly bail on the current job. Medicine bottles are too hard to open as it is.
My only concern about the job switch would be if you can make those health changes, which include lifestyle, while traveling 50% of the time. Maybe there's a third option that you haven't uncovered yet? |
