Thinking about the GMan Air intake Kit

Hi,

I'm currently thinking to upgrade my air intake to the GMan air intake kit with the Bully EFI controller.

For those of you who have installed GMans Kit:

a.) How do you like it?
b.) Improvements in driveability, power, acceleration, intake noise etc?
c.) downsides?

The reason I'm hesitating is as I'm living in Europe at the end I would pay around 700$ for the kit with shipping, import taxes and customs fees.

So would you invest 700$ in the GMan air intake kit?
My pipes are stock and they'll stay stock.

It is an 800cc bike. The most you will get out of the intake and processor is 5 or so HP. That's it. There isn't a reserve of additional power waiting to be unleashed by throwing on a bunch of bolt-on parts.

Does it make a difference? Yes. There is more power. Does it make the bike accelerate better, give it more top end, or cure your bald spot? No. The power difference can be felt, but it is not anything that is going to make you sit up and say "wow".

Keep the bike stock and save what you would spend on the parts toward a bigger bike. Because if you're already asking about more power, then that time is not far off...

If I found a used one on the swap meet here or eBay or somewhere else for a couple hundred bucks, I would do it.

But spending almost a thousand? Heck No!!!! That is almost half the blue book for the whole bike!

I would definitely save your money, put it towards a larger bike, or weekend trip somewhere.

the more I think about it the less I want to do it, it's a bit too costly.

I will put it at the very end of the list, I have other ideas floating in my head like a Wilbers rear shock since the stock bumps me in my lower back, maybe a Saddleman Explorer Seat which runs me around 550$ - or I might bite the bullet and take the Mustang vintage wide touring everyone is raving about - but that Mustang seat in Europe costs me around a 1000$.

Oh and I want white wall tires too, Metzeler ME888 WW gonna cost me 330$ + installation front/rear or Maxxis Classic, they'll run me 230$.

Maybe I'll do the poor mans mod down the road, K&N made for the bike and drill the airbox + fuel commander. But who knows, my mechanic told me to stay with the original filter since that one filters fine particulates much better - I heard that more than once....


Was thinking about the DJ-Drive, but that will run me around 700$ mark too, and I mostly drive in city traffic - and if I take country back roads I usually run between 50-60mph max. Anything faster gives too much head buffeting....

Your mechanic is spot on. The K&N works to produce more power, because it does a miserable job of filtering the incoming air. Somewhere around here, I posted a picture of the throttle body on my C50 after running a K&N filter for 10,000 miles. The greasy debris on the throttle body made a lifetime smoker's lungs look pristine.

Your list is admirable and expensive. I would tend to recommend you look to do the creature comforts (saddle, DJ Drive, maybe the shock), but steer away from the "performance mods". The best you're going to see is a 5 hp bump. It isn't worth the money (unless you REALLY want to do it).

The other thing to consider here is how long are you planning to keep the bike? If you have formed a long term relationship with it, then go to town, make it yours.

Thanks for your opinion Skrapiron,

I bought it new - and after checking taxes and insurance for the Harley I would like to have (Road King / Road Glide) - I'll keep my C50 till the engine is used up to its last bit. From there - we'll see then.

I'll definetly start with the seat - I'm leaning towards the Mustang with the backrest - even tough the price difference is 300$ between the non backrest and the backrest model.
Next on the list: White wall tires either Metzeler's or Maxxis.

And then - if the Mustang seat doesn't make the ride comfortable enough I'll bite the bullet and get the Wilbers rear shock.

Did a 100 mile highway run yesterday, speed wise I stayed around 65mph, above that there's simply too much buzzing around my head - and after 50miles I couldn't stay seated in the same position anymore longer than 10 minutes. So the Mustang will be well worth the money I guess.

Performance wise I'll keep it stock I guess.
