Hi all,
I've searched and read quite a bit on the Honest Abe mod, but still have a question. The mod is usually described as 3/4" up the center and 4 1/2" holes in the back. I know from reading that Abe used a 3/4" conduit because its what he had on hand. I have a 1" hole saw and was wondering if anyone else had put a larger hole than 3/4" up the center of the baffles (Basicallly widening the Mickey hole and adding a big hole to Cyclops). Especially curious if anyone started with a smaller hole and widened it. Did you notice any more rumble or deeper sound. (Or louder though I know that's what the end holes are for.) BTW, planning on doing this for my 08 C50. Not going for loud as much as more rumble. (Well, maybe a little louder, but nothing like the VH Straighshots I had on my Shadow ). all I've read just used a 3/4" pipe as to not change the actual hole at the back. The only time I heard of anyone making a bigger hole is to debaffle the pipe completely.
I've seen some drill 4 holes and others drill 8-10. I guess it's up to the individual, but the recordings I've heard, the extra holes didn't make a whole lot of difference. Just my observations.......

I just did mine last night on a 07 C50.
I measured 3/4 metal electrical conduit and it came in at about 7/8 inch od. Many have done it that way. I also measured metal ground stakes that others have used and they are under 3/4 inch. I used a 24inch length of 1/2 inch id black steel used for plumbing apps. the od is about 7/8" . Did a sharp angle cut with a reciprocating saw and sharpend the end on a bench grinder. Worked like a charm. I did the 7/8 hole and fired her up and heard a distinct lowering but when I added the four holes there was a considerable difference. A bit louder and much nicer. Do the centre hole first and if you like it leave it but I was very pleasantly surprised after I added the 4 holes. I didn't have a half inch bit handy so I used a 7/16th. Grinnin ear to ear about this mod. |

I did the honest Abe mod and it still didn't sound very good. I broke down and bought exhaust.

Thanks Moto for the measurements. I was wondering if the conduit was ID or OD. That clears it up.
I tried the 1" hole saw but it keeps binding on the baffle holes so I haven't gone full bore on it yet. Instead, I'm thinking of a way to keep a 7/8" hole saw centered on that existing 1/2" hole in the second plate. If it works I'll post a follow up. |

ya, any 3/4 inch piping will work for the centre hole. For the holes on the plate I started with (4) 3/8 inch holes and then enlarged them. I gave it a bit of time after each step in the mod so I could really know what it sounds like before deciding to go further. I loved the final product.
