This is good advice. I too used to play in rock bands and use PA equipment as a personal stereo, play with guitar amps cranked. I know I've lost some of my hearing, especially high end. The other day somebody at work was playing with one of those tone generator phone "apps" and a girl in the next row said "Hey what is that?". I said what is what? I heard nothing.
I now run mufflers and cats on my trucks and bikes, and am a big believer in ear plugs. Even when just running a drill with a wire wheel or the grinder I will put on my hard protectors. On the bike I have baffles with the "Honest Abe" type holes driven in and drilled, not too loud, but I can hear it. I love riding with ear plugs under my helmet, I can hear myself think. Sometimes it is so quiet it feels like you are flying

What type of ear plugs does everyone use? I used to do alot of target shooting and used the foam plugs, but I believe they make them at different decibel reduction levels. Is there a certain decibel reduction that is good to reduce noise but not block out all the road noise?
Also, where have you bought your earplugs at? |

I just use the silicone swimming-style ear-plugs. I find they stay in my ears the best, and do a good job of blocking wind noise but still letting me hear horns and stuff.
Plus, when it rains, the inside of my ears stay dry! |

You can get foam ear plugs at most bike shops for not to much money. They usually come in packs of 10 or 12 and are taylored for motorcycle riding.

I read somewhere, maybe it was in Rider magazine, that the wind noise is the biggest contributor to hearing loss vs. the engine noise or exhaust noise. But it stands to reason that if you have completely de-baffeled pipes they are aren't going to be kind to your ears over the years.
I like using the foam plugs from Walmart - also a big container. They are the same brand as the ones sold in the drug stores but much cheaper.

I fully understand the annoyance of Tinnitus. I have a long history of it from working as an Industrial Maintenance Supervisor in a plant(16+ years) I have recently found a product that has helped tremendously---Er Long Zuo Ci Wan, 200 ct, Plum Flower I buy mine at the Chinese Herb Superstore. This is not a sales pitch for them and I am in no way related to this company but when I read this post looking to upgrade my pipes I came across this thread and thought my 2 cents worth was appropriate.Due to the annoyance of Tinnitus any relief is priceless. Check it out guys it's well worth the small price of $10-20 a month to get the relief I have found. Hope this helps at least one member of the family we have here. You can never replace what has been lost but hopefully this will make if livable for you too.
