I know there's been a bunch of threads on tires, but I'm wondering if there are any new choices I should look at? I'm wanting white walls, or if I could find any-raised white letters. Obviously, safety comes first, but aesthetics is nice too. Any suggestions? Oh and I think the bikes all had the same size wheels but it's a 2007-C50 if that makes a difference.
If I remember right thee is a Whitewall version of the Commander IIs. First tire I have ran that seems solid even hitting tar snakes. Have yet to try it in wet weather, but a light rain I got caught in they seemed to have good grip.
Dont buy shinko tires. They're hugely popular because of the low price point. What the selling dealer isn't telling you is you will be back in for new tires before August. The rubber compound is ridiculously soft and about as durable as a pencil eraser. They're half the cost of premium tires, but you have to replace them twice as often. That means paying for two sets, two installations and sales tax twice. Save yourself some money and above all a lot of headaches. Get a better tire.
Oh, that is a problem. I guess I should look at the treadwear ratings. I hadn't even thought of that. I always did on my cars, I don't know why that never occurred to me with the bike.
Ok, I always hear don't buy Shinko tires but I purchased 777 whitewalls in November 2014 for my C50 and have put almost 6k on my tires and they still grip well in all weather and the rear looks about 40-50% worn and the front looks about 20% worn.
I had an issue with my WW, they cut the WW too deep and I inquired about it directly to Shinko and they acknowledged it as a manufacturing error and sent me a new tire. Saddlebags cover my rear WW so I'm not concerned about it and will swap the tires if something happens to my current rear.
Now my ninja 250 is a different story. 740/741 combo purchased in March 2015. The rear 741 wore out right at 3k. The front still looks brand new.
Contacted Shinko again and asked if this was normal wear and they asked me a few questions and I sent them some pictures and they said it was normal wear. I told them thanks and started looking for another brand but again they sent me a rear tire free of charge.
I've heard the horror stories about the tires but haven't experienced them other than the ninja 250 wearing out quickly. They recommended I run a slightly higher tire pressure. I haven't mounted it yet because I haven't been riding that often.
One thing I will note is that I could see the tread disappear on the 741. Tire was good, left and rode about an hour and got home and the tire tread was gone.
I inspect my tires before and after my rides, so this helped me notice the wear.
Like oil to each his own..
I just put on Dunlop Elite 4 two weeks ago. I so far have loved them. Great grip and good feel, even in wet. They say tread wear is around 18,000 miles. We'll see how that goes.
