Default driveshaft ciclip: what's the trick

Hi everyone,

i've been reading tons and tons of handy tips here on the forum! very grateful for that.
I'm currently checking the grease level on the driveshaft and ... i have the hardest time getting the drive shaft taken out.
I removed the grease cap yesterday without problems. now i have to take out the circlip that holds the driveshaft in place.
I have tried a lot of options, but without success.
I'm squeezing the circlip and pushing down a little bit. the circlip almost closes entirely but then ... nothing else. I can't move any deeper or I can't really pull the shaft out.
What am I not doing right?

how can i get the old grease completely off? just by using a cloth?

much appreciated all.

yup, been using those... but like i said, I can get them closer together, but can do anything with the shaft.... should I push it in more or pull all together?

Try pushing down slightly on the shaft (toward the final drive housing), as you compress the c-clip. Once compressed, the c-clip should come out of the groove.

Once the c-clip is out of the groove, the drive shaft should pull straight out.

Yep The way I take them out is to pull the clip in with the pliers and compress the shaft then it just lifts out- alternately is to pry one side with a screw driver - that kinda wrecks the clip tho. Pushing DOWN on the shaft to make clearance while compressing the clip is the secret tho- its easy once the pressure on it is relieved.

That's what I did M50Dave. I also bought a new set of snap ring pliers. Those multi-angle type. The shoulders that held the pins on that tool were so large I could not get both of the pins hooked on the snap ring. I even took my Makita grinder to the brand new tool.
I just man handled it out.
Be sure to use eye protection.

The first time I tried this project I had a cheap set of snap ring pliers and no matter how hard I tried I could not get that snap ring out. Finely, I went to Sears and bought their best set and it was a breeze.

Thank you all guys!
I was apparently too focused on the "eyes" of the circlips and never noticed that the back of the ring was already popping out. So, once I realized that....

Thanks everybody!
Safe trails
