I wonder if this shop is a authorized suzuki shop doesn't sound like its the way out local shop would operate...
Anyway, see if the dealers wants to arrange a trade, see if he can get you another C50...remeber the shop rate may be 80 bucks a hour but thats for the customer to pay,,,the mechanic probably gets around 15 bucks/hr, so just maybe the dealer can put the bke back together and make a buck doing it,,,sell you a new bike, and make a buck at that, seems like I'd try to go that road...

Check your state's lemon laws. You might be able to dump it right back into the fella that sold it to you's lap and get your money back or stick him with the repair bill.

Barring that, get another engine. A lot of the folks selling them make videos of the engine running before pulling them, and a lot of them are from wrecks with low miles. With a manual, a metric wrench set, a set of metric sockets, and a set of metric allen wrenches you should be able to swap in the new motor in less than two days without breaking a sweat. The toughest part is going to be connecting wires and tubes, and wrangling the engine in. It's small but it's heavy, ideally you should get a case of beer and sucker a buddy into helping you.

you can't get a C50 engine as it's fuel injected. if you have a volusia (pre 2005) then get a carbureted engine. you'll have to change out so much stuff if you don't stick with the same engine. And at that point, just buy a new bike...

The OP points out that he has an 07 model year C50. So, any year from 2005 will have Fi.

I rebuilt a salvage bike and it is a real "Johnny Cash One piece at a time" piece of work.

'06 M50 engine, '05 C50 tank and fuel pump, not to mention a C109 front fender.

I think I used an '06 wire harness and the ONLY problem I had was that the plug for the fuel pump had one extra pin.

I was able modify the connector and make it work, but you friend does have a point, as things like fuel level indicators and other stuff in the speedo pod changed over the years, some connectors may not be compatible.

As for the engine itself, I don't know of any of those connectors that changed much, but have not had reason to check into that either.

I would definatly go for a replacement engine over a rebuild.
