Default 2001 Battery/Alternator Question

Hello all!

It has been a while since I have stopped by here. I have a 2001 that won’t hold a charge. I can hook it up to the battery charger and it starts up on the first crank but if it sits for any amount of time the battery is dead. I have bought two brand new batteries that have been drained so I don ‘t think it is the battery.

Short story short, I am selling this wonderful bike to a high school kid and I want to steer him right on the problem. This bike has Janet Jugs (pairvalvectomy for those that don’t know the history of that term) and no other motor mods. What say you??? How much would you estimate it would take to fix this?

I love this bike. Sturgis. Myrtle. Hail. Rain. Sun. Heat. Perfection. I am just not riding her anymore and she deserves better. I want to give her the best with an owner upgrade at being in the wind again. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you,
Amber

A multimeter capable of dc amp readings will really help.
The normal Battery current with ignition switch off is under 3 MA.

The first thing to check for is to make sure you are not turning the ignition switch all the way past off and into the park position which turns on your brake light as this will quickly run down any battery.

To check for normal Battery Current Leakage disconnect the negative batter lead and measure the leakage with accessories and ignition switch off if more than 3ma you have excessive leakage. You probably have leakage in the amp range so set your multimeter on a high amp range. Read the leakage DC current by connecting the amp reading multimeter between the disconnected negative lead and the battery negative terminal.

With the Amp reading disconnect fuses one at a time to see if you can isolate the leakage to a fused component. If this doesn't help disconnect remove couplers an connectors one by one until you find the source of the leakage. The hardest to isolate leakage problems are often when a wire has rubbed and connects to the chassis often from a steering movement.

Start her, turn the idle up (black knob under the tank) up then disconnect the ground from the battery...if it stays running the charging system is working...If not you probably need a new regulator.
