Default New to Shaft-Drive

im not sure what these shaft driven bikes are supposed to sound like, but mines startin to worry me. i know that theres supposed the be alittle bit of a "clunk" noise when you shift on a chain driven bike. but my Volusia is doin it. is it ok for it to do that? or is somethin worn/broke? are there bearings that need replaced?

ALSO- do you need to change the oil in the "rearend" of the bike (where the shaft meets the rear wheel) like you would a car or truck?

thanks guys!

Well, the drivetrain consists of a driveshaft and a universal joint, so yeah there is alittle "clunk" when shifting, but really not very much.

What you want to be concerned about is if is sounds like a siren or makes a growling noise, either would indicate a universal joint going bad.

I change my drive oil about every other oil change, and that should be great plenty, maybe even alittle over kill, but heck it's easy and it doesn't take very much at all, just make sure you use the correct gear oil, I buy it in Suzuki brand from the dealer.

Without a doubt, if you don't know if it has been done, you need to pull the final drive and separate the driveshaft from the coupler (remove a seal and snapring) and grease the driveshaft splines with molybedum grease.

These bikes are notorius for rounding off the driveshaft splines due to a lack of grease from factory.

LOl, preach on viper. Take it from someone who just went through a shaft a month ago. Go buy you a new seal and grease the spline and coupler. Mine went with no warning. The clunk may very well be the signs it's going to go. This is a win, win fix for you. More than likely your problem. And if not, it's good preventive medicine. Cause it will fail at that joint sooner or later
