Default Maintenance: OIL & OIL FILTER?

I am attempting to changing my oil & oil filter for the very first time by myself. What kind of oil and oil filter should I get? (I have a 2005 C50)

i use a K&N filter. It has i believe a 17mm nut on the end of it so its easy to take off.

As for oil, last year I just used the suzuki brand oil at my dealer.... but there are plenty of threads on here about oil to use.. I believe one of them was rotel? I'm sure others will weigh in on the oil.

The filter was about $10-$12 bucks at my dealer.

This really depends on your religous and political affiliation..HA.. Do a search and you'll see there are 100's of threads.

There is lots of good information between synthetic and petroleum with good results using either.. The agreed consensus is DO NOT us an oil with a slip additive.. And The K&N 138 seems to be the most popular filter..

My first post was the exact same question!

Welcome to the site.
Wix is a great filter at a decent price. Oil is personal. I use Amsoil. If you stick to manufactures specs, you can't go wrong.

It looks like the owners manual says SAE 10W/40. Any pros/cons to using synthetic.

Pro that seems like a con ........... costs more, but lasts longer. True synthetic does not oxides as quick or as bad as dino if you were to store the bike for a period of time, like over the winter.

Do not use any oil that has "Energy Conserving" in the circle label on the back. Rotella oil (Diesel) by Shell is a very good choice and you can get it at walmart in Dino or synthetic. The Fram M/C oil filter should be avoided. IT was described as "How to build a cheap filter cheap" in an oil filter comparison.

Once you switch to synthetic you can't go back to the normal stuff.

Oh, and make sure you use actual motorcycle oil, don't use car oil. It's NOT the same thing.

Rmagdn, what Tman said about the pro seeming like a con is true. What I have found is that out of bordom I change my oil way more often than I need to so I am second guessing my synthetic decision. I switched to Mobile 1 V--Twin 20-50 last year. My issue is that if I get in the 2000 mile range and know I'm going on a fairly long ride, I service the bike again.. I know it's an over kill but that's just me.. So at 10 dollars a quart it adds up pretty quick.. I do like the K&N filter because of the nut welded on the end so it makes removal a breeze.. Welcome BTW..

Yup, tons of threads in here on oil.
I use commercial dino oils and change oil and filter often (around every 2000 miles or so)- one brand that is also rated for your bike is Rotella 15/40 though any of the Heavy Duty Diesel CJ-4 15/40 oils will work well for you. Rotella is the only one with the Jaso rating if that is a concern for you, for me its not and I personally like Delo 15/40 and a new favorite of mine Vavoline Blue 15/40 again, all commercially rated CJ-4 oils and automobile SM.
If you only will change close to the recommended 4000 mile oil change intervals then I would mostly like choose a synthetic. Any motorcycle synthetic is good as well as Rotella 5/40 synthetic which is rated Jaso for your bike. But I will stay out of the synthetic arena since I do not use it.
Bottom line is you can use something like the above or pick out a well known motorcycle specific oil.
Filters, lots of them on the market. Pick one or whatever is on sale. I personally do avoid the Fram, only because of the cardboard end caps ... whether it matters doesnt matter, so many filters on the market.
Emgo and Hi-Flow are 2 respected brands and can be found reasonably priced online, just google it. Emgo 10-55660
They cost between $4.00 and $8.00 -
In fact I got one sitting right here that I was going to offer to Skrapiron since he sounded out on the VStar bike I bought last year when I was looking for opinions. Seems a waste to throw it away.
