I agree with a coil as being the culprit. They can "kind of work" and kind of not sometimes. Temperature, humidity, etc can make finding this a beast, as they cause these type of intermittent running issues as the coil is beginning to break down internally. All of the symptoms mentioned point there brother.

After in the shop for a week and a half, bike started of good.....
Mechanic assured me it wasn't the ignition coil and said it was the carburetor. After changing the jets out and messing with the mixture screw, he finally got it to run and idle smooth. Took it out today on a ride and it jumped and sputtered a little in the middle of the ride but then was fine. On the way to work it starred again and when I pulled in the clutch it shut off. Popped the clutch and started back up and got to work. I give up, any ideas besides needing a while new bike????? Guess I'll start with replacing vacuum lines..... I am having this same issue but I havent ruled out that the problem isnt a side stand switch going out. It has been a pain for me this season. Does yours backfire while its running sluggish too just before it stalls?

Like most engine problems it is generally a number of problems before the engines run so bad we finally take them in for repair.
With most everything now working good last tech seemed to get the bike running. I would now suspect an intermittent short in the wiring as perhaps the final problem too be fixed "The Straw That Broke the Motorcycle's Back". If problem happens during turns it indicates short near the steering as steering movement may have worn a short perhaps within the wiring for an add on tachometer. Then again it might still be in the electrical system which a technician with an oscilloscope might be able to find. I have found many a illusive electrical problem that was only solvable using a recording oscilloscope on numerical control machinery etc. the same technology applied to bike may solve the rare intermittent motorcycle problem.

You should be able to get a "gap Meter" for lack of a better word. It's basically a plug that goes between plug and coil. You can adjust it to make it "jump" a gap. Sometimes coils will be weak, and still fire, but not enough to give you full power.
Now I come from Drive by wire VW's but have dealt with a number of electrical problems....most of them are PITA's to solve but you can do it. First if your plugs are wet, fuel isn't a problem...backfireing tends to mean too rich or too much fuel for one reason or another. RARELY does a carb fail where it's too rich....unless it's a stuck bowl or something. If it was fouling plugs I'd say you're either not getting spark because it's not being delivered to the plug by the coil (bad coil or wires), or power is being cut from the coil. Some main culprets for power being cut from the coil would be a neutral safety switch, kick stand switch and ignition (both on the bars and at the key). Check the kickstand first...it's the easiest. Not sure if you can bypass it with a wire or a resister between the plugs of the connector. That's something we used to do on the cars...we'd find what kind of resistance the sensors would have, then unplug them and shove one end of a resister in one side of the plug, then the other...tape it up and go for a ride. I'd invest in an Ohm/ Volt meter at the very least. Last edited by rodwade; 01-03-2013 at 12:57 AM. |

I wish the OP would have come back into the thread he created and updated it to let others know if he ever got it fixed and what the problem was.

Had this happen with my machine. There is a kink in the gas line where it attaches to carb? I cut this kink out an rerouted the line.
