The C50 and M50 are closer to each other but the S50 is a different bike altogether. The feel, ride, weight and overall stance is different. Yes, it is a carb (C50 and M50 are FI) and it is cold blooded but if you rejet you won't have a problem. I'm not far from you and after going nekkid with my Vol starting when cold is no problem, rode down to 18 degrees (actually all my bikes are carbs, no problem in cold weather, warm up time is just a bit longer). If you can do test ride all 3 and see what you like and dislike about each.

I've yet to see a carbed suzi 800 that likes the cold, especially if 10% ethanol is all that's available to feed it.
Be aware that FI did not hit the Volusia line. While the C50 is basically the same bike and VL800, Volusia, and C50 tend to be used fairly interchangeably if you want FI you're going to be looking at 2005 or later C50, M50. The S50 appears to have never gotten FI, but instead has dual carbs. If you're willing to deal with a little cold weather stubborness and mandatory fuel stabilization additives at almost every fuel up (unless you are able to get gas without ethanol in it) in when it gets cold all will start fairly easily. All make roughly the same amount of HP. But there is a pretty significant difference in weight between models C50 (610lbs.), M50 (584lbs.), S50 (535lbs.), VL800 (526lbs.). There really is no best choice between them as all are nice bikes. If you like the S50 go for it, as long as you add a good fuel stabilizer with fill ups it will start and run without much if any hassle. Last edited by dfinitlydisturbd; 11-16-2012 at 10:23 AM. |

On a side note: I didn't realize the C50 weighed that much more than the Vol. That can't be due to just the F.I. gobblygook?
