I am new to the bike world and I just purchased an 02 Intruder Volusia from a friend. He had some mods already done to the bike. The one I am questioning is the lowering. He lowered it with 1 3/4" dogbones, and gave me the OEM parts also.
Here is my question: I am 6'-1" and about 330lbs (big ole boy), should I put the bike back to it's original height? What advantages and disadvantages are there with it at the new lowered height and the original height? Last edited by MemphisMason; 06-26-2012 at 02:37 PM. |

Well lowerd you will have less ground clearence . You will not be able turn as sharp in tight curves . You being new to bikes , I doubt you would know the differnce in the turns anyway .
Being a heavy guy watch out for the fenders bottoming out . Ride for a lil bit see what ya think. I'am no small dude either ( 280 ) . I didnt like mine lowerd with my fat *** and my wife all of 115lbs. was just to much for it lowerd in the turns & parking lot speed bumps. I went back to normal stock height within 1 day of lowering it .. Hope this helps ya out . By the way one FREE MASON to another !!!

When I lowered mine, i was expecting a big "A-ha!" moment because everyone talks about how much better it handles and how the heavens split open and rain will instantly turn to sun when riding. Never happened. I mean, I could tell a difference, but main difference to me was scraping floorboard when making virtual everyday turns...which was annoying. I went to the next wrench party and put it back to stock height.
To each his own, but my vote is to return to stock bones & go from there. Sent from my iPhone. Typos are unintentional but highly probable.

I am 6-2 and 220 I WAS 360 when I got my M50, so unique perspective. I am sorter on legs (32 inseam) taller up top. I would absolutely NOT change the height, even with a Mustang seat I find the height perfect. So I would say for ME?. I would put it back to stock height where it was designed to be.
No flames please...lol. I like the bikes geometry frame/wheel wise just the way it is! Cheers,

Im a little dude, but didnt notice a difference when I used the 2.5 dog bones... except it looks way cooler (without that big camel hump fender). There is a tension adjuster on the monoshock tho you might want to try changing. I think the more weight you are putting on the bike, the tighter you can change the shock. Might be able to keep it low, and not rub the tire on the fender over bumps. Less comfy though I suppose!

Yeah the previous owner told me that he adjusted the shock all the way so I may not have a problem. I guess time will tell. I plan on putting some miles on it this coming week.

If thats a picture of your bike. It doesnt look lowered to me, so may not be lowered much, maybe an inch. I cannot see the top of the tire on my bike. |

I don't think you can compare your bike to his as far as lowered visually, that rear fender has been trimmed under the rear fender struts.
