Does anyone know if these two motors are basically the same ? could I buy a C50 motor and put my Volusia carb and other outer junk on it and put it on my Volusia ?:?

No. They are not the same motor. The Volusia motor has no provisions for sensor mounts, necessary for the fuel injection on the C50 motor. If you have a C50, you have to find a motor for one. 2005-2008 are the only years guaranteed to fit. After 2008, Suzuki made some changes for emissions reasons and included a second spark plug per cylinder as well as others. You cannot put the newer motor on an older frame.

Doin' fine. I usually preface my answer with "anything is possible if you throw enough money at it" anyway. You just reminded me of the need for the disclaimer!

That too..... Far too many changes between models to be considered.

Cost of a rebuild (if you do it yourself) is around $2300. Cost of a rebuild if you pay a shop is around $4000. Cost of a replacement engine (if you can find one) is around $1500 (if you can put it yourself). Cost of a replacement engine (if you can find one) is around $2500 (if you pay a shop to put it in for you). None of your options are inexpensive.

Well, I'm aware of the cost but it was my first and probably only bike I bought new and not really ready to let it die. I have since bought a used 2008 C50 with a voyager kit on it and that's what I've been running since Oct. last year.

I get the emotional attachment, but you need to ask if it is really worth putting the money into it. A running 2004 has a book value of about $1600. You're looking at spending substantially more than that, just to get it running again. That is why most people walk away when their bikes die. It just isn't cost effective to do major repairs on them. Especially when there are so many good used RUNNING bikes on the market for less than what the repairs would cost.... Just something to consider.
