Default Valves... When to service...

Hey Guys! New to the C50. I traded in my GSXR on one to start riding something a little more sensible... have to admit, I wish I had gotten one a long time ago, I love my boulevard.

I brought this up in a post before but didn't get many opinions since it wasn't really related to my thread topics. I noticed the service intervals is 7k mi for valves. I bought mine with 7k on the clock and I doubt the previous owner adjusted the valves the day he/she traded it in... I don't really trust myself to do it right... I can do a lot of stuff, but I don't feel comfortable tearing into a motor. I also don't trust dealerships as I've had numerous bad experiences with it including one that hand tightened my castle nut on the axel and didn't even put the dang pin in... I almost lost my back wheel 20 miles away.

So is the manual typical over exaggeration? I was supposed to do my gsxr at 16k and when I lived in State College took it to a very reputable race mechanic who tore into it and said everything was within spec... and that bike was ridden really hard. Other than describing the noise it would make via text, does anyone have a video or anything of what the valve lash sounds like? I'd had to take mine in, blow a bunch of money and either have it not need adjustment or have them screw something up...

Thanks fellas!

(if there's anyone in the philly area who is very confident doing the service, I'd be happy to throw you some money when the time comes and a few beers to show me how to do it.)

My C50 is at 24k roughly and it's never been done. My CBR1100XX is recommended at 16k like your GSXR. That one is at 53k and never been done either. I have not dug that deep into it on the C50 side, but I know of guys on the CBR board that have gone 100k plus, gone in, and only had two valves be off by .001.

Some say that neglecting to set the valves will result in burnt valves and that is true when taken to the ultimate conclusion but the main idea in setting the valves is to maintain the performance of the engine. Can you detect the decrease in engine performance before they are reset? - Likely not but it is there.

I’ve put almost 15000|Km on my C50 over 4 summers. I’ve checked and set the valves every winter and I do know that they do move away from the setting I made the previous time.

I cringe every time I hear/see someone say "check the valves". If you are taking the time and effort to go into the engine that far you should be making the effort to do the whole job and individually set each of the valves.

When the valves are correctly set all the intakes are set to the exact same clearance, (I choose 0.003”) and the exhausts are the same as well, (I choose 0.008”) and you can tell the difference.

Not sure who you can find to set them for you but if anyone is only checking them to see if they are "within spec", they ain't doin the job or earning their pay.

I just did mine for the third time (just under 30k on my bike, 02 Volusia). Every time this site has been my friend and guide. This sticky is the best and is open every time I do the adjustment:

Take your time and do it step-by-step and you can easily save the money and do it yourself.

Have a safe and wonderful New Year,

Mike

It'd be worth your while to have them set to specifications. an example: my '09 M50 same engine as your C50, when I checked and set the valves at the 600 mile service, all but one valve measured within the specification. I agree with Gene, set the valves right after you measure them, it's just good form You may have gotten lucky with that gsx-r...

The job itself is not difficult, just take your time. Quite enjoyable really

I'd recommend you have them checked and adjusted where necessary. To not do it as part of buying a used bike is gambling with the money you paid for the bike. This way you know when it's been done, whether there was any needed adjustment, and your making a decision to maintain the bike for the future. My guy charges $150 so to me that's cheap investment for the alternative of doing major damage to the engine. The thing is, in most cases, the valves could be too tight and difficult to hear the lash. They'll continue to get tighter, not the other way around. You'll lose performance, burn a valve and your done... Might as well buy another one. In my opinion...
