2006 C50, low miles, under 12k. Got the clutch very hot once (at about 9k) doing parking lot drills and it stopped engaging. Opened the cover and released it with a wrench at the adjustment screw. That let me drive home. Then I did the full clutch adjustment and it's been ok till now. Today I noticed at speed when I go to full throttle to pass (or just for fun) the motor revs free for about a half a second then the drive engages. Doesn't seem to matter what gear I'm in the I do this. As far as I know there's only one 'slippable' piece, the clutch.
Would someone with a little more experience tell me if another complete adjustment is called for or if I need a new clutch basket. By the way, I also have been using Rotella T6, has anyone had this effect the clutch adversely?

Have you checked the condition of your drive shaft connection to the final drive? Lots of known issues with lack of lubrication there from the factory that have led to failure of the mating splines.

It wouldn't hurt to check the adjustment arm behind the engine cover. I once & a while when the bike is at temp, with the engine idling in neutral, will pull up slightly on the cable where it goes into the engine. When the slack comes out you can feel when the arm has moved enough to take all the slack in the linkage out. If you can't feel any difference when you gently pull up on the cable then you likely need to adjust the arm as there is no free play in the linkage. Your clutch is likely not completely releasing full pressure to the plates.

Mouse, I don't think the Rotella T6 would be an issue. It's been used in these bikes for thousands of miles without issue.

Sounds like if you accelerate hard the clutch will slip for, as you say, for "about a half second". That tells me the clutch sips under hard accell. If the clutch plates ever got hot and "glazed" (not unlike brake pads or shoes) it would be natural for the clutch plates to slip. A "half second" on hard aceleration would be no reason for concern. But I know you, you will obsess. Change the plates and upgrade the springs, live and be happy.

And just WHAT in my past would make you say I obsess????
![]() Could it be that I have had 4 handlebars, 3 sets of lights, 4 sets of bags, 4 seats, 2 exhausts (and wanting a third)? Or that I have about $25k in 2 C50s. I did the full clutch adjustment over the weekend but the weather, etc, hasn't cooperated with a test ride. Probably need to add a Barnett clutch to my winter list. (That means 2 because the Hiney will, of course, have to have a new one also.)

I went through this last year. Think I fried mine in the bike prade in a bike parade in chillicothe. At that time, bike had about 12k. MY bike was doing the exact same thing. Tried to adjust it, even took it to the dealer. After a few weeks, it just came back. I put in a new clutch, and end of problems. It's super simple. I'm sure there is a link on here. At the time I bought a service manual on ebay for like 5 bucks. I think between new springs, disks, and steels. From my dealer came to around 160.

Yeah, you got a fried clutch. go and buy a quaility clutch pack (plates and discs) and a set of Barnette springs. It will make the bike feel better than new. Don't forget to soak the discs in motorcycle oil for at least 24 hrs. (I soaked mine for two day while I waited for the new cover gasket to come in). My replacement clutch has over 15,000 Miles on it and I can rev it and launch the bike and the front tire will come up off the ground.
